Amazon plans to build its tallest skyscraper in Bellevue, WA

Amazon is preparing to build a big presence in Bellevue, WA, the affluent suburb of Seattle where it was originally founded. The company on Tuesday began the permitting process for Bellevue 600, a 43-story tower in the city's downtown that will accommodate an estimated 4,200 workers, reported The Seattle Times. Not only will the building be the largest built by Amazon, it will be the largest in the city. The anticipated completion date for the tower is 2024.

The company has special plans for Bellevue, where it plans to bring an estimated 6,500 jobs over the next few years. Amazon is planning on relocating its entire worldwide operations team from Seattle to Bellevue over the next few years. In addition to the new Bellevue tower, Amazon has secured half a dozen leases of planned or currently existing office space in the city, according to the Times.

The reason for Amazon's return to Bellevue -- where founder Jeff Bezos started the company out of his garage in 1994 -- isn't purely nostalgic. After Amazon's plans to build a part of its "HQ2" in New York City fell apart, the company was forced to look at other options, including in its own Washington State. Bellevue hasn't formally been declared HQ2, but will likely absorb at least some of the remaining jobs intended for the scrapped NYC office.

Bellevue has several proposed towers at 600', so "tallest" might depend on timing, as well as tiny differences in height.

Phase 1 is under construction, however, phase 2 which involves a shorter tower at around 450-550 FT is on hold indefinitely. This is because of Amazon and its new approach to work/office jobs with their hybrid model.

At the 42-story 555 tower, Amazon will complete the working floors up to the 19th level, but is pausing construction plans for the second tower at Bellevue 600.

“The pandemic has significantly changed the way people work,” Schoettler said. “For our corporate and tech roles, we’ve adopted a hybrid model that offers employees increased flexibility — each team decides the balance between in-office and remote work that makes sense for them.”

“It’s early days, and like many companies, we’re still learning how these new habits may impact our office footprint.”

Despite uncertainty around the return to the office, companies have so far been holding onto office space in Bellevue.

The two tall ones are basically equal in height. The City's limit is 600' for the middle of their downtown, and both hit that.

Two other three-tower jobs would each add three more at 600' (each with two residential and one office). One, by Onni, is showing signs of starting soon.

Link Light Rail will finally connect Bellevue to Seattle on March 28. Currently Bellevue has rail but it doesn't cross Lake Washington. Even before rail, Bellevue easily beat many US central cities in transit commute share (meaning the 154,000 residents of the city regardless of where they work).
