Appears work has restarted at the site, which is a good sign, although the author isn't completely sure if it's utility work, or actual construction.

The podium is definitely not the best, but I think the angles of the glass may potentially glitter in the light nicely

Question - is there going to be a way to go through River City? Otherwise the nice river walk parts of these developments are going to be super stunted. It's like Marina City on the north side of the main channel of the Chicago River. I can't locate the original master plan showing how it dealt with the Marina City break.

AFAIK, no. The older renderings from back when Riverline included the Southbank parcel didn't really address how a riverwalk would address River City's marina. Looks like pedestrians would need to jog over to Wells.

I can’t remember where I saw it, but they are planning on running the trail straight under the building. I’ll try to see if I can find a proper source for this information

Yes, this was always the intention with River City; Goldberg designed this as a street running through the building.

However, it doesn't bode well that Lendlease made no attempt to connect River City with Cooper at the north end. Currently there's a fence/retaining wall and about a 6 foot elevation difference with no way to connect through. At least River City is now converted to rentals, so in theory a smart landlord would recognize the value of a Riverwalk connection in adding value to the building and especially its long-vacant retail spaces. Back when River City was condos, there was no way the HOA would ever support strangers walking through the lower level. The current landlord is probably holding out for the city to pay for any connection.

Nice update! Happy to see this getting out of the ground finally..... As others have said - I would hope at some point there is a cohesive connection along the river front. I detest developers that aren't forward thinking. I get it - It costs money, but at the same time, adding these things makes your asset more valuable IMO.

Whoa, this is awesome!! Way more interesting than a continuous boardwalk. Although I suspect a lot of people won't realize the path exists, unless they do a lot of wayfinding signage.

Does anyone have an article they can share or give some basic knowledge on how funding to riverwalks happen? How much comes from the developer, city and parks department? With this and the 78 isn't it beneficial to all parties to design, build and expand this to Chinatown in order to further development?

I'm pretty sure the developer foots the bill for sections of riverwalk like this and for The 78.

That's my understanding. And it's mandated by the building code that new construction along the river must include a riverwalk. That's why you see random disconnected segments along the North Branch where they redid a shopping plaza.

I didn't know that...... Pretty nice actually. Are there design standards the developers must adhere to? A river walk is nice.... but not if it looks like a set of lego pieces in design.

Still cool the city is forcing that - It will eventually make a continuous river walk much more obtainable then forcing the city to pony up a ton of money to do it all at once.
