I was on the hype train at the start, but now the Thai cave sub's been rejected, the Cybertruck bombed, the Hyperloop's a non-starter, SpaceX won't stop blowing up, Twitter's in a downward spiral, and Starlink doesn't have enough customers.

OceanGate "got things done" too.

I have a 2018 Model 3 and it's still a great car. To think of the headstart they had on mass market EVs around that time and what he's done in the last 8 years since is sad.

he sacrificed big to save the world with Twitter, imagine the censored cesspool it would be (see Reddit) if he hadn't bought it, it is really the only place left where the truth can be discussed freely on a world stage

If you think Twitter doesn't censor things its owner doesn't like (or hasn't been failing ever since the buyout), perhaps you'd be interested in what this Nigerian prince I met has to say...

Alternatively, we could get back to transit or transit-adjacent stuff like how much of a ripoff the Loop is.

Unreal brainwashing you're falling for. Totally off topic but you need to touch grass.

Back on topic I don't think tubes or tunnels are going to have any significance in BC. A potential 3rd crossing of the Burrard inlet is going to have to be a bridge. Likewise if we ever make some kind of progress towards a connection to Vancouver Island, it will be a bridge or floating bridge at best.

This is legitimately a cult of personality. "Sacrificed big" = he made some autistic edgelord comments in a public forum that spiked the share price for Twitter enough that the FTC went after him and he had to put his money where his mouth was. The guy could say or do anything and you'd twist yourself into knots going to bat for him. I used to be a big fan of his, maybe 10 years ago or so. Regardless of what one thought of Twitter before his takeover, by nearly every objective metric Twitter has been (even more of) a miserable failure since then. They're still losing money and users hand over fist, and that's putting aside everything and anything related to the obsession over "woke censorship" when it's really just online losers who want to turn the entire internet into 8chan.

Tesla is in slow-motion freefall and transit hype projects like Hyperloop or the Boring Company (nevermind going to Mars) are not going to change that anytime soon.

Twitter is night and day on the censorship front compared to reddit and the others.... I see people attacking Musk heavily on Twitter every day and they don't get banned, reddit on the other hand is a shaped community due to censorship and banning

anyways, like you said, back to transit talk, Twitter is still my number one place to check when it comes to transit news and up to the minute stuff on train and bus delays etc

That's EXACTLY THE PROBLEM - anyone can say anything and get away with it. There may be some folks like yourself who like the kind of "free speech absolutism" that attracts countless trolls and haters, but most of us just want a civil place to engage in the rational exchange of ideas and information.

Moderation is a good and useful thing, IMHO. Kudos to those on this and other sites who do a good job of it.

Yeah, not when the Loop averages about... 35k passengers a day; the Canada Line matches that ridership in less than five hours.

We have literally nothing to learn from Elon or Vegas.

Way back in 2017 Jarrett Walker in his excellent Human Transit blog wrote a piece on "The Dangers of Elite Projection" that explains projects like the Boring Company's tunnels or the Hyperloop. His hypothesis is the elite favour solutions that work for them without considering the reasons why they can't possibly scale to work for everyone.

I remember that Elon responded with, quote, "You're an idiot."

Something he usually does when a critique is right on the money and he doesn't have a better retort.

It's the standard debating technique for everyone who doesn't have a cogent counter-argument but feels compelled to argue anyway.

NIMBYs want bus stops every block or something.

Quote:
The removal of bus stops is a cruel way to punish seniors, disabled bus riders and families with children. Most of the proposed bus stops TransLink plans to eliminate have existed since 1975. At the present rate we will have 25% less bus stops in the City of Vancouver by the time of the 2026 civic election (October 17). If Vancouver and TransLink staff continue with the unfortunate program of eliminating up to 25% of bus stops, many problems will arise. Ridership will not increase. Accessibility will be reduced.

Links aren't working but some new RFIs

RFI - Track Intrusion System Technology Study
$1000 to $10K USD (Est.)
TransLink Posted: 2 Feb. 2026 Closes: 17 Feb. 2026 2:00 p.m. PST
Product and Service Categories: Non contact sensors, All terrain vehicles tracked or wheeled, Proximity sensors, Railway tracks
Quote:
TransLink’s British Columbia Rapid Transit Company (BCRTC) is conducting a Track Intrusion Engineering Study to evaluate the current Track Intrusion Detection System (TIDS) on the SkyTrain network and to identify suitable replacement technologies. The RFI seeks vendor input on alternate intrusion detection technologies, functional and performance requirements, and pilot‑implementation concepts that could later be deployed across the Expo and Millennium lines as well as other rail corridors. The study will progress through technology scouting, requirement refinement, pilot design/installation, and will feed into a future full‑scale procurement.
Quote:
BCRTC is undertaking a Track Intrusion Engineering Study to test the existing Track Intrusion Detection System against possible replacement candidates. The goal is to gather sufficient information to inform a future replacement implementation using a programmatic approach. The process from study to procurement will progress according to the general steps below:
a) Study alternate intrusion detection technologies that provide intrusion detection suitable for the SkyTrain operational environment
b) Refine the high-level functional and performance requirements for a new Track Intrusion Detection System
c) Design and implement a pilot Track Intrusion Detection system
d) Inform a future procurement for a full deployment of the replacement Track Intrusion Detection systems across Expo and Millennium Lines, as well as BSP and SLS
This RFI is to provide BCRTC with information to support the study of alternate Track Intrusion Detection Technologies in order to facilitate the subsequent steps of the program.

I've generally found that stops for CoV routes tend to be placed stupidly close together (obviously not all of them so don't flame me). I looked at the map for the 49 and which stops they propose to remove and wondered why they hadn't already.
