Valley Line West: 102 Avenue bike lanes temporarily moving to 103 Avenue
October 9, 2025

In order to accommodate Valley Line West LRT construction, the bike lanes on 102 Avenue downtown will be temporarily relocated to 103 Avenue.

On or around October 14, work will begin to install protected bike lanes along 103 Avenue from 103 Street to Railtown Park Trail (110 Street). This work is expected to take approximately three weeks, weather permitting. Once installation is complete, cyclists can use the bike lanes on 103 Avenue, and the bike lanes on 102 Avenue will close. The 103 Avenue bike lanes are expected to be in place until the end of 2027. During this time, on-street parking will be limited on 103 Avenue, including changes to EPark zones.

To access 103 Avenue, cyclists can use the existing north-south bike infrastructure along Railtown Park Trail (110 Street), 106 Street or 103 Street.

The 103 Avenue bike lanes will be integrated into the larger downtown cycle network, including bike signals, signs and pavement markings. Ongoing communication will be provided to cyclists, commuters, residents and businesses, along with wayfinding signage.

The City and Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) recognize that shifting the bike lanes may be disruptive. The City and MIP appreciate the patience of active transportation users, including cyclists, who will have to adapt their routines and shift their route.

As part of the Valley Line West project, new, permanent bike lanes will be built on 102 Avenue. Valley Line West construction is anticipated to be complete in 2028, followed by an extensive testing and commissioning phase to ensure safety and reliability before the line opens.

That was predicted when the line was proposed. They basically put the Millwoods to DT buses on rails. The WEM line will be similar, as the LRT more or less follows existing bus routes. I will be curious to see if there is a significant increase to WEM, or if it more or less match current bus ridership.

Again, this was all known and designed to prioritize development. Which was always a huge gamble. How many decades will that take to materialize? Was compromising the system for the hopes of development worth it? I guess that will be judged by the future.

The author of that article makes valid points although they are purely speculative and not necessarily informed. The article appears to be written with a decided bias which likely leads to a certain amount of negativity regarding the Valley Line.

Prolly based on paid customers. I bet unpaid ridership doubles it...

I don't ride it often but I don't notice it really stopping at traffic lights.

" including running at-grade on city streets "

Also isn't the SELRT entirely in its own ROW?

"This included a deliberate decision to take a longer route down neighbourhood streets near the Strathearn stop to serve a redevelopment site, instead of taking a more direct/diagonal route down Connors Road towards Mill Woods."

20 years from now I won't regret this decision by the City.

This Surrey group also is moaning about BRT and wants to jump straight to the most expensive option for elevated SkyTrain.

happening far too often on this new line....

Oh look, we are now planning more grade separation at key intersection on the rest of the lines being considered...

and we still have an under-used expensive tunnel just a block away. Low floor, high floor, urban design, traffic, yeehaw. This line isn't meeting expectations in anyway.

Millwoods (and WEM) waited so long to get LRT, its unfortunate this line/system misses the mark. I think a tram system like this has its place in an overall transit network, just not the way edmonton is implementing it.

oh same here. The tram in my opinion would make an awesome loop of say jasper ave and 104 the avenue, and north/south routing to make the loop some where at either end like 124 and 97.

Another loop could be jasper/whyte avenue.

Or look at some of the older street car network, there was a reason those routes worked, and could easily be re-used in part, enhanced for the modern day.

The highlevel streetcar/tram thingy could go from Nait to Whyte or Strathcona Junction.

City names preferred proponent for high-floor LRT vehicles
December 19, 2025

The City of Edmonton has named Hyundai Rotem Company as its preferred proponent to supply high-floor light-rail vehicles for use on the Capital Line and Metro Line.

“We’re pleased to be moving to the next step in the procurement process for the light-rail vehicles the City needs to maintain and expand its transit service,” said Bruce Ferguson, Branch Manager, LRT Expansion and Renewal. “We look forward to working with Hyundai Rotem Company to deliver this crucial infrastructure to support Edmonton’s growth to a city of two million people.”

Design and manufacturing of 40 high-floor light-rail vehicles is anticipated to begin in 2026, with vehicles arriving in 2029 and 2030.

The City followed a rigorous, fair and competitive international procurement process. Two of the three bidders shortlisted by the City submitted proposals to supply the vehicles. Hyundai Rotem Company received the highest combined technical and financial score.

The vehicles will replace the City’s fleet of 37 Siemens U2 vehicles, which are near the end of their service life. Additional vehicles are being procured to accommodate service growth for the Capital Line South Extension and Metro Line Northwest Extension.

The City is aiming to award the contract in early 2026.

Interesting, are they thinking of buying a new model?

Looking at their existing products their "EMU" series seems like the closest fit but I'm only seeing trams, automated (Canada line), and commuter rail variants in their current lineup.

New material vs old tired + they heard my call to put camera in the most problematic spaces! I just hope that it is high enough to avoid damage.

I'm honestly surprised there wasn't CCTV on these entrances already. Just about every other nook and cranny of the LRT / Pedway system has something.

Good job on putting forth this suggestion. It's little things like this that are missing all over the place, that on its own seem like nothing, but when you add it all up, it really sums up what's wrong, and how easy it can be to fix, if we stop looking at it as a huge problem and work on the small things we can.

Rendering of the future high-floor Hyundai Rotem LRVs? If so, they look slick!

Whatever you do, don't read the social media comments from people complaining about the 300 million the city is paying for them. LOL
