The company that developed it was Talon, based in Markham. One of the founders, possibly both, was born in the USSR but moved to Israel and then Canada as a child. Going to guess they settled in Thornhill, which has a large community of Jews and Russian/Soviet Jews. Thornhill is half in Richmond Hill and half in Markham.

New Tecumseth, Kawartha Lakes, Halton Hills, Perth North, Centre Wellington, etc etc etc. The number of people who refer to where they live as one of these amalgamated names can be counted on one hand. But another amalgamated place where most people actually refer to the amalgamated name is Cambridge, which spawned after combining Hespeler, Preston and Galt, with three distinct communities with main streets. Funny how that works. Though, most residents of Cambridge live in regular subdivisions outside the cores of those former towns so that must be the reason.

As for New Tecumseth, Alliston is definitely the most recognizable name (much of that due to the Honda plant) and has a nice downtown. But Beeton and Tottenham have pretty decent downtowns too.

I can see how it would be confusing if someone was trying to get directions to Alliston on a map but they only saw New Tecumseth lol.

Regarding Chatham's amalgamation, it's similar to other rural amalgamations which Harris forced through in the 90's - Kawartha Lakes, Norfolk, Brant County, Haldimand.. a bunch of them got "single-tiered" with Harris deleting all the lower tier municipalities and effectively just leaving the county-level government.

I actually don't hate it from an operational perspective but it has created some real "identity crises" in some areas. And creates oddities like Google Map having labelled Lindsay as "Kawartha Lakes" for years and years because of the municipality name and it being the seat of the municipality, instead of the town name itself..

Same with Alliston - Google calls it New Tecumseth for some reason:

Leamington:
The town that is the tomato capital of Canada and for some reason thought it was a good idea to change their water tower from tomato red to boring white.

Lots of Mexican farm workers. So many businesses downtown geared towards them.

Point Pelee:
The southern tip of mainland Canada. Also in Leamington.

Is the eastern tip of Canada in NFLD a big deal too?

Just counted how many towns I did in those three days. 46 proper towns, plus the 3 cities of Guelph, Sarnia and Windsor. And a few hamlets and a few separate parks/beaches.

Next year will be a few around London, then a few between the 401 and the middle of Lake Erie's north shore, then a few in Grey and Bruce County.

There's also Lakefield north of Peterborough, Eganville west of Ottawa and Pembroke NW of Ottawa. And three or maybe a couple more than that in cottage country like Haliburton. But not sure when I'll get to these ones.

After that, that will be every town in Southern Ontario. I've been to North Bay and Sudbury, but not beyond that. I know the main towns of N. Ontario I need to get to but not sure how many small towns after those there are.

Couple things I love observing in between small towns. Mennonites going fer a rip in their horse and carriage on the shoulder of the road, general stores and that single tree still standing in the middle of farm land.

There was a New Orleans Pizza in Welland that lasted from the late 80s to early to mid 90s. I recall it was popular with people ordering for gatherings and birthday parties, ordering "party trays" (24 slices) cut into squares and it was decent pizza from what I recall.

Anyone remember Mother's Pizza? That was the gold standard for chain pizza in Ontario. A sit down pizzeria before the proliferation of red roofed Pizza Hut.

We used to go to Mother's Pizza every time we visited my grandparents who lived in Scarborough back in the 80s. Nice ambience.

They brought the chain back to life maybe a decade ago, but I think it failed within a few years. We visited the outlet in Brantford on our way back to London from Toronto, but it wasn't nearly as good as I remember it (the pizza, service, and ambience).

Nice Point Pelee shots!

And then there is this

Every frozen pizza tastes like a Frisbee.

Took the kids to Milton Main St. trick or treating for three years in a row. Switched it up this time and went to two different ones, being Streetsville (Mississauga) and Georgetown. There are five of these that I know of between 15 and 35 minutes from me. The other two are Clarkson (Mississauga) and Dundas (Hamilton area). If you wanted to you could hit up four of them the same day because the the first one is 10-12 then there's 12-4 for a couple of them and 4-6 for Georgetown.

Not only that, but on the Sunday they do it indoors at Burlington Centre mall, which we attended. After that I threw a party in the backyard.

You could in theory fill up your kids' buckets so much that you wouldn't have to buy any to hand on the big day.

Streetsville:

Georgetown:

nice shot of l'Assomption. I never realized it was primarily situated on a bend in the L'Assomption River.
