The completion of the Randal Reef clean up project will be delayed by a couple of years to address a "structural issue," says the federal government.
Containing and dredging 615,000 cubic metres of toxic waste in Hamilton Harbour began in 2015 and was expected to wrap up in 2025.
But the setback means the timeline has been extended to 2027, said Canada Water Agency spokesperson Joseph Péloquin-Hopfner in an email to CBC Hamilton Wednesday.
"Once the structural issue has been repaired, the project will resume," he said.
All of the contaminated sediment is contained, he added.
For Chris McLaughlin, executive director of the Bay Area Restoration Council, the setback is "obviously disappointing" but doesn't come as a huge surprise given the project's complexity.
