Yeah even last season the Flames finished with 96 points and missed the playoffs whereas Montreal made it in the East with 91.
It just varies each year.

Good return for Andersson, happy with that trade. Who's next?

There's maybe five good teams in the West. The rest are all sub-500 in the old NHL.

A six-game winning streak and getting 50% regulation wins after that is probably enough to be a playoff team in the West.

My eldest son coaches a U13 team in the city and I was on hand last weekend when the Stanley Cup showed up at his team practice. My son knew in advance, but kept it a secret from his team. They were pretty excited! They had a chance to get their team photo taken sprawled on the ice around the Cup, just as if they won it.

The reason why the Cup was in town last weekend and not this is because it was booked for the White House for the Orange Buffoon to have his picture taken with the Florida Panthers.

I was going to hang around the Ian Fowler Oval on the Avenir Centre plaza after the game, but, I had attended the game with my son, and he wanted to get home for a break before going back downtown with his team at 11 PM for a skate on the oval. They were pre-booked for that time as part of Hockey Day in Canada.

My son took in absolutely everyhing Hockey Day related with his team. They played a game early in the day. The team was at the Moncton/Chicoutimi game in the evening, and were back on the ice at 11 PM to serve as a backdrop for the hockey broadcast from the oval.

I think SportsNet did a great job!
There was another Wildcats game on Sunday afternoon (Cats beat Cape Breton 3-2 in OT). Mt eldest son went to the game with me again, and he bought a ticket on a game-worn jersey and won!

Between his coaching duties, all the Hockey Day activities with his team, the visit with the Stanley Cup, and now winning the jersey, it's been quite a ride for him this week. This has probably been the most fun he's had around hockey since he played prep school with Rothesay-Netherwood.

Canucks trade Sherwood. I'm still kinda floored by how bad the wheels came off in Vancouver. 2 years ago they went all in on a run that ended in the 2nd round, and most thought they would be back. Now they are likely picking #1 and won't be competitive for a few years. I felt like the Canucks were being too aggressive when they took Lindholm off us, but didn't think I was underestimating how bad of a call that was.

Too bad we didn't get NHL Olympic hockey in 2022, at least we get it this year.

I am not a fan of the Olympics at all anymore.

I will watch a bit, but it's really just the worst three works of the sports year every four years.

I'm stoked for the Olympics, love cheering for my country and watching people have their dreams come true. The Hockey is the best part by far, can't wait!

The political climate definitely made it more visceral, but I still miss checking the results before bed. I think that is the case for this Olympics as well, but I'd rather just watch the regular season. I like sports for stories and the stats and this season has been a great one for watching milestones. McDavid might hit the top-50 in all time scoring this season and reach 100 points to tie Lemieux for second all time in 100-point seasons. Just imagine if he didn't have two strike shortened seasons in his career.

It's those "just imagine" that makes debating these stories and milestones so fun. Just imagine if Lemieux didn't get cancer, or have chronic back pain, or have hip problems, and was actually able to play a full season.

Yeah. It's sad that Lemieux had so many issues. Still a joy to watch when he was playing. There's been a lot of great players with reduced careers. Lemieux, Bossy and Forsberg are at the front of that list for me. Bossy, only 752 games played, but 573 goals. If you don't count his last injured season, he never scored less than 51 goals in a season. Forsberg only played one complete season without missing at least a few games.

Just shows how tough the game is and how fortunate one has to be to reach those levels.

Don't forget Bobby Orr.

The 1970s were a long time ago, but, he was probably the most transformation player the NHL has ever seen. He rewrote the rulebook for defencemen and changed the entire strategic nature of the game.

Curious what Oilers show up tonight against the flames.

I'm somewhat hoping they only play 97/29 for very limited minutes and provide the rest of the bus to step up.

Not only that, but to ensure the big guys dont get hurt pre-olympics.

Totally. He was just a little before my time. I don't remember getting to watch him on TV (I would have been four his second last season and he only played ten games in his last season.)
