Glad to see this one doing well. It operates on a double seasonal basis.

Dec-Jan and Jun-Aug.

Don't know many routes that do that.

===============================

A few diversions last night due to the snowstorm that started in YYZ, messing up the evening rush.

TP261 and AF358 went to YUL
WS2561 went to YOW
AC425 took off YUL and returned to YUL.

AC and TP eventually made it to YYZ around midnight. The AF 77W is still in YUL, scheduled to depart at 6pm.

The AF dispatch called the tower and asked if they could come to YUL. They were planning on going to YOW initially. Weather at both YOW/YUL were fine when it diverted. So it must be related to the fact they knew the flight wouldn't be able to operate back to YYZ right away last night.

Good question. Would have saved a little bit of fuel going to YOW instead of YUL. If it had gone to YOW, would have been cool to have had two AF 77Ws on the ground simultaneously as Wednesday's YOW departure was upgauged from the usual 772. AF 77Ws are showing up more often at YOW and coming up in May the majority of the flights that month will be on 77Ws.

In the end, the plane never went to YYZ. It flew YUL-CDG last night.

So don't know what happened to the passengers. Were they put on an AC or WS flight to YYZ? Bussed to YYZ perhaps? Maybe it was a light load. Or maybe the plane went AOG after it landed in YUL. When it came in, nothing was wrong with the aircraft, so something might have developed later perhaps. Who knows.

YCD 19/18: 491499 / 435000 = +13.0%
YCD 18/17: 435000 / 358000 = +21.5%
YCD 17/16: 358000 / 340000 = +5.3%
YCD 16/15: 340000 / 312000 = +9.0%

WS have been shamed into returning back to a humane seat pitch: https://westjet.mediaroom.com/2026-01-16...ategy-to-reflect-feedback-and-guest-data

Quote:
CALGARY, AB, Jan. 16, 2026 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced it will change its cabin-configuration approach on the limited portion of its fleet where it densified seating. Following a review of operational data and feedback from guests and WestJetters, the airline will return to its prior standard seat pitch for economy cabins on these recently reconfigured aircraft by removing one row of seats.

A classic example of when not hiring Canadian backfires on you. When your CEO is from a postage stamp-sized country without domestic flights lasting hours they underestimate how much this would piss Canadians off. Add to that it completely muddied Westjet's brand proposition.

I suspect one of the other factors is Air Canada. A few days ago Air Canada released some info on the Max8 that will be moving from mainline to rouge. Including seat layout.

Air Canada, needs to compete with Porter, they have been improving their offering.... premium snacks, wine/beer, etc.

Then Westjet needs to compete with Air Canada.

Good to see WestJet backtrack on this one to remain competitive in the market.

The next thing they need to do is fix the cream problem. Not having real cream for the coffee on WestJet continues as a problem.

This CEO has made quite a few big mistakes since coming to WestJet, the biggest being the cancellation of the 787. Can’t imagine he will be there for long.

I don’t think the problem is that he isn’t raised here.

Strategic direction is the CEO’s job. He has talked about wanting to focus on leisure traffic, and seeing that as where the market is going. And wants to have an ‘insurmountable’ cost advantage to his competitors.

The problem with that is:
1. Westjet serves more than just leisure passengers. If be was getting out of serving non-leisure, that’s a problem for Canadians. And for WestJet, since it is a significant part of their customers. That’s a sort of closed-minded viewpoint - a CEO has to see more than one strategy.
2. It is true that the lowest cost player tends to be the most profitable, and to be the last one standing. But racing to be first to the bottom carries a cost in customer goodwill. And that cost is real, even if not accounted for in CASM.
3. The old Westjet was low-cost. But it was also focused on what people wanted. And on service. Maybe not hot meals, but getting the basics. The mindset of cost control does not seem to be asking “what do customers need?”

Lack of a regional strategy seems to be an issue, IMO, but regional ops are out of industry favour these days. And with reason. I still think they are core to serving customer needs.

Bottom line - his vision of what the company can be, and what it is, and how to go from one to the other seem at odds, which is not a good sign.

There definitely was a potential lost opportunity on the 787, although exactly what it could or should be, I don’t know. I hope it doesn’t unfold like this, but it would be ironic if reordering the 787’s also proves a mistake due to Alaska’s SEA operation taking hold of that part of the market by that point…

Expect an expanded bilateral air agreement shortly.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-greenland-carney-trump-tariffs-9.7050435

Quote:
Qatar and Canada's major projects

During the press conference, Carney said that Qatar has committed to "significant strategic investments" for Canada's major building projects.

That capital will get projects built faster, "supercharge" energy industries and create jobs for Canadians, he added.

Calling it a "new chapter" in bilateral relations, Carney said the two countries will also strengthen "people-to-people" cultural ties, which will include expanding direct flights from Canada to Qatar to boost tourism and business.
More details to follow, I'm sure.

Seems like UA is back on YEG-ORD and WS has also re-opened bookings for YEG-SLC.

Guessing RDU’s fate will be determined after tomorrow’s announcement.

Is this gonna be one of those "we won't load the destinations in the schedule before the announcement and it'll only be bookable a couple days after the fact" to prevent leaks?

With what feed on the FRA end? You’d be shooting yourself in the foot by launching Frankfurt and going against star. Frankfurt is a connecting airport nothing more.

There's the only way to further stretch the 789 fleet - fly to far-flug places in winter only.

2 days from now they'll be back to 99 once they've dropped YYC-RDU...or maybe they'll keep it for six weeks this summer on Saturdays only to technically claim they're still flying that route.
