What a forgettable, disposable building.

Love that splat in the middle of the street as well.

That McDonalds was always busy so I'm not surprised they are trying a new location on Rideau.

Side note: The Courtyard Marriott NEEDS to go! Is there a plan to redevelop that site yet? Such a terrible suburban looking building with little to no street interaction.

No plans at this time. If they could at least redevelop the parking lot. They do have underground parking, so the surface parking could go.

Michelin-starred chef Akira Back to bring high-end Japanese cuisine to Chateau Laurier

Marissa Galko, OBJ
December 17, 2025

Michelin-starred chef Akira Back will introduce his namesake restaurant at the Chateau Laurier in the new year, bringing high-end, modern Japanese cuisine to Ottawa.

“I’m excited to bring my culinary vision to Ottawa,” Back said in a news release Wednesday. “It is thrilling for me in a city so rich in culture and history while also being the nation’s capital. My goal is to create a dining experience that feels both refined and unexpected, a place where guests will discover something exciting every time they visit.”

The restaurant, expected to open in early 2026, will “blend high-end dining, elegant artistry, modern Japanese cuisine with global influences,” according to the release.

The menu will feature some of Back’s signature dishes, including AB tuna pizza, which consists of a wafer-thin crust, umami ponzu aioli, tuna sashimi and micro shiso; 48-hour short ribs, made with Australian wagyu beef and cooked for 48 hours in a traditional galbi jjim marinade; and the Nazo nine, a mystery box experience featuring nine chef-selected dishes, revealed tableside.

“Akira Back Ottawa will reflect the type of thoughtfully crafted experience we strive to bring to the property,” said Genevieve Dumas, general manager of the Chateau Laurier. “The combination of Chef Back’s visionary approach, the Fairmont’s historic elegance, and the restaurant’s striking contemporary design will deliver an unforgettable experience for guests and locals alike.”

The restaurant will seat 109 guests in a space anchored by a sushi bar, with two private dining rooms for groups of 12 to 16. The space will be in line with Back’s “moody, but elevated aesthetic” found in his 28 locations worldwide, including in Paris, Hong Kong, Dubai, London, San Francisco, Toronto and Seoul.

Back was born in Seoul and raised in Aspen, Colo., and was a professional snowboarder before becoming a chef.

The Chateau Laurier also recently opened its 1912 bar in partnership with Vankleek Hill-based Dunrobin Distilleries. The speakeasy is a permanent nod to the hotel’s heritage, named for the year the Chateau Laurier opened.

Rideau Street McDonald's reopens by honouring predecessor's viral raccoon
Just down the block from its old spot, owners of the new Rideau Street McDonald's will make a donation to a local raccoon sanctuary.

By Laura Arenas, Ottawa Citizen
Published Dec 19, 2025 | Last updated 2 hours ago

A new McDonald’s on Rideau Street is paying tribute to its predecessor’s most infamous guest by making a donation to a local raccoon sanctuary.

Holly’s Haven Wildlife Rescue will be the benefactor of the wackier moments in the often sordid past of the previous Rideau Street McDonald’s, the site of many late-night disturbances before its closure two years ago.

There, a raccoon became a sensation when a video emerged of a brawl at the 24-hour fast-food joint. In the middle of the clip, a man with a cigarette dangling from his lips can be seen at the edge of the frame, where he, inexplicably, pulls a baby raccoon from his zip-up hoodie before quickly stowing the creature away.

<snip>

The location was expected to open in the coming days, and will honour the raccoon with a decal nestled into one of its windows.

ByWard Market Heart & Crown property listings removed; agreement reached to stay

Adam Beauchemin, CTV Ottawa
December 19, 2025 at 1:53PM EST

Ad listings were posted online to lease a property at 67 Clarence Street in the ByWard Market, where the Heart & Crown has been located for more than 30 years, but an agreement has been reached to keep the Irish pub in place, and the listings have been removed.

Two listings were posted for the property to spacelist.ca by real estate brokers Marcus & Millichap, one for the lower level and one for the ground level. The listings have been removed.

The legal listing firm Marcus & Millichap says Heart & Crown has a binding offer with the building’s landlord to remain in the space.

CTV News has not yet received comment from the Heart & Crown.

The bar is part of the ByWard Market’s Irish Village and serves Irish-inspired dishes, offers live music and plays domestic and international sporting events. According to the Heart & Crown’s website, the business has been at the Clarence Street location since 1992.

There are two other Heart & Crown locations in Ottawa, one on Preston Street and one in Barrhaven, and the business also owns the Aulde Dubliner & Pour House in the ByWard Market.

I went to the new Rideau Dalhousie McDonalds...
Worst McDonalds ever! Total failure.
No chair, no table, no bathroom, it's just a counter to order,
then you have to stand outside on the sidewalk in the rain and the wind and the snow to drink your coffee and eat your Big Mac.
No.

McDonald’s has been a horrible ‘restaurant’ with awful food for as long as I can remember. Try some real food from a local spot that isn’t an American megacorp.

That's unfortunate. Sounds like a location better suited to.. oh.. I dunno.. one of our damned transit transfer stations!!!! are you listening OC? huh? ARE YOU? Sorry.. my eye twitches when I think of those two paired capital letters.

Can I ask what the demographic of people were during your visit? I figure this spot would do well at bar close, with students, maybe during the summer? It's not like there is a convenient outdoor spot to eat around there. Sucks that there isn't a little mini plaza with some benches and tables at the corner of George and Dalhousie.

So it's basically get your bag and head to your studio apartment.

Contrast this to the MickeyDees on Bank st. It's tiny and mildly annoyingly busy but there are washrooms, a sit down area and plenty of places to take a public seat between the Bank of Canada Plaza and the general seating along Sparks. I've stopped there many times for a small single burger during a long walk.

I guess you open your shop when you open your shop but this location would probably have had a better launch in May. Or was there in fact a lineup out the door?

That was by design to avoid the "colourful" behaviour of the last one. I can't blame them.

New Robo Lounge envisioned as Ottawa's ultimate piano bar

Thanks to the Bösendorfer grand piano, the Robo Lounge is poised to become the crown jewel of Ottawa piano bars

By Lynn Saxberg, Ottawa Citizen
Published Dec 16, 2025

The crown jewel of Ottawa’s new Robo Lounge is a massive Bösendorfer grand piano on loan from Carleton University, its sleek, dark wood glinting with the promise of many nights of fine music.

Lounge co-owner Scott May sat down to tinkle the ivories during a recent visit, a move that allowed this reporter to get a sense of the quality of the sound and sightlines at his newest venture, which officially opens its doors to the public in January.

My verdict? Excellent on both fronts — and that handsome piano elevates the whole vibe.

Robo Lounge is a 150-seat bar/café on the ground floor of the Clemow, a highrise rental building aimed at folks aged 50 and over. It opened in the spring of 2025 in the Glebe-adjacent neighbourhood known as the Glebe Annex, near Carling and Bronson avenues. Although the street address is 275 Carling Ave., there’s also an entrance on Cambridge Street South.

May, a 10-year veteran of the Ottawa nightlife scene, and his wife, Ali Fuentes, moved into the Clemow soon after it opened, and wanted to add to the long list of amenities available to residents of the building, as well as enhance the neighbourhood with a “comfortable and elegant” spot where everyone is welcome.

They decided to open a hybrid coffee shop/music venue, a model similar to the other Robo establishments. The first Bar Robo on Somerset Street ran from 2016 to 2020, while the second Bar Robo (also known as Q Bar) has been operating out of Queen Street Fare since 2019.

“My wife, Ali, loves coffee and wanted to open a coffee shop, and I really love music so it’s a great combination for us,” May said, describing their vision as the ultimate piano bar.

“We will open early and have a great coffee program and nice baked goods that we make every day,” he said. “But I also wanted a listening room with a dedicated stage, the correct instrumentation and a proper sound system — comfortable, relaxed and elegant, with sophisticated interior design.”

With each Robo location, the neighbourhood and its demographics inform the core of the business. The now-closed Somerset/Chinatown room appealed to artists and creatives, and was more “creative and zany,” May said. “It skewed a little bit younger.”

The downtown location at Queen Street Fare caters to office workers who appreciate the fact that happy hour starts at 4 p.m., while the new lounge is designed to appeal to the over-50 crowd that lives at the Clemow. That means “nothing too obnoxiously loud,” May said. “We have to respect the neighbours.”

There will be a drinks menu of “creative, classic” cocktails, plus wine on tap and beer from Ottawa’s Beyond The Pale brewery. Food offerings will be “healthy and fun,” May said, and likely to include soup, salad, burgers and the “world-famous” Robo breakfast sandwich.

As for the live music, May is programming the lounge to feature solo acts and small ensembles, and hopes to reel in some big names in jazz.

One of the regular performers will be Dave Draves, the noted Ottawa producer, who’s putting together a monthly show of Elton John songs from the 1970s. It debuts during happy hour on Jan. 7.

Other piano-playing acts confirmed for the new Robo stage next month include Ottawa singer-songwriter Megan Jerome on Jan. 8, jazzman Peter Hum on Jan. 23 and a Jan. 10 double bill featuring Ottawa’s Lynn Miles with Toronto-based musical eccentric Bob Wiseman, a former Blue Rodeo keyboardist. Tickets are available at www.barrobo.com/therobolounge/#event

In the meantime, a soft opening takes place Dec. 23 with saxman Peter Woods and friends playing holiday favourites.

Olive Garden coming back to Ottawa with location to open in Westboro later this year

Marissa Galko, OBJ
January 16, 2026

Popular American restaurant chain Olive Garden is returning to Ottawa, with a new restaurant in Westboro slated to open this summer.

Recipe Restaurant Group, the Vaughan, Ont.-based company behind eateries such as Montana’s, Swiss Chalet and East Side Mario’s, announced the next phase of its national expansion of the Olive Garden brand in Canada on Thursday.

In July 2025, Recipe acquired the eight existing Olive Garden restaurants in Canada from U.S.-based Darden Restaurants Inc., agreeing to expand the brand across the country.

The first Olive Garden restaurants to open under that agreement would be located at Vaughan Mills in Vaughan and in Ottawa’s Westboro neighbourhood. The restaurants are expected to open in summer 2026, though no specific addresses were given.

“With these upcoming openings, we’re taking an important step in expanding Olive Garden’s footprint into new Canadian markets,” Frank Hennessey, CEO of Recipe Restaurant Group, said in a news release. “This expansion reflects our confidence in the brand, the strength of our partnership with Darden, and our ability to execute thoughtfully and strategically across Canada.”

The company said the new restaurants mark an important milestone in growing Olive Garden’s presence beyond western Canada, adding that other locations are in “various stages of planning as Recipe continues to build a long-term, sustainable development pipeline across the country.”

Darden had expanded the Olive Garden brand into Ontario in the 1990s, with two locations in Ottawa. But, by the end of the decade, Darden had shuttered its 11 Ontario locations.

Matthew Jackson, vice-president at real estate firm CBRE in Toronto, believes Olive Garden is poised for success in eastern Canada.

“There’s a huge market to tap into in Eastern Canada, where the population is large and has general familiarity with the Olive Garden brand, if not fond memories of the restaurant itself,” Jackson said in a blog post on the CBRE website last September. “There’s pent-up demand and nostalgia for this type of restaurant so it’s a good time for Olive Garden to make a comeback.”

He added that the chain’s emphasis on value will give it a competitive edge. “The value segment is thriving right now because people want to get the most bang for their buck. That’s also why we’re seeing chains like Dollarama, Value Village, Maxi and No Frills do so well.”

While he noted that retail vacancies in Canada are relatively low and may slow Olive Garden’s Canadian expansion, Recipe should be able to secure new locations.

“The retail market is very strong right now,” Jackson said in the post. “There’s a lack of new product being built, a lot of competition for space and landlords are asking top dollar. But Recipe Unlimited’s strong covenant, ability to increase foot traffic and general reputation should help them to make deals happen.”

Jackson added that Olive Garden will see more success if it targets locations in the suburbs, rather than in city centres. “Going urban would be unlikely because the lease rates are high and that’s not where the key Olive Garden customers are,” he said in the post.

LOL, rumours are this might be in the old Swiss Chalet / East Side Marios in Hampton Park Plaza at Carling and Kirkwood, which I don't exactly think of as Westboro.

Northland Properties of Vancouver has bought all 86 Denny's restaurants in Canada and will have full ownership and control of them. They have also bought an equity position in the US company that controls Denny's in the US.
Northland owns restaurants and hotels in Canada--eg Moxies. They also own the Dallas Stars of the NHL.

Are there any Denny's in this region?
