Unique aging process earns Saskatoon distillery 'best-in-the-world' title

SASKATOON — The prairies’ weather conditions became an integral part of Black Fox Farm & Distillery’s whisky-making process. The company took a bold approach, leaving barrels to age outdoors, exposed to Saskatchewan’s climate, which has summers reaching over 40 degrees Celsius and winters below –40. That unique way of aging their spirits earned the family-owned and operated company the 2025 Worldwide Whisky Producer of the Year award from the International Wine and Spirits Competition.

The award ceremony was held at the Battersea Arts Centre in London, England, on Nov. 12, with Black Fox beating four other entries: Northern Ireland’s Bushmills Irish Whiskey in County Antrim; France’s Celtic Whisky Distillerie in Brittany and Le Breuil in Normandy; Walkenried-based Hercynian Distilling Co. of Germany; and Triple Eight Distillery from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.

Black Bridge Brewery moves production to 9 Mile Legacy in Saskatoon

The two breweries are entering a joint venture that will see them partner on beverage production, distribution, and community investment.

Interesting! Krispy Kreme Canada opened its first location in Winnipeg in 2024, so here's hoping that Saskatoon is on the radar to gets its first location.

Fresh Colombian-farmed coffee at Saskatoon's Colombian Nutana

Vintage clothing store the Clubhouse opens in historic downtown Saskatoon location

Businesses and non-profit organizations regularly open and move in Saskatoon. Today the StarPhoenix talks to Taylor Cross, who together with her partner Sam Murphy, opened the Clubhouse by Seven Sundays in a ground floor corner unit of the Avenue Building downtown at the end of November.

The couple previously opened Seven Sundays in 2023 just a block and a half away, and were seeking to diversify their vintage offerings (defined as items that are usually between 20 and 90 years old).

The couple opened Grill Station in Sutherland in late December. Located close to the Sutherland railway tracks, their decor and menu items are railway-themed.

Sadiq has a background in banking and finance after coming to Saskatoon from Pakistan two years ago. He followed his wife who arrived three years ago with a food and educational background.

When Maria Orjuela and her family moved to Saskatoon from Calgary, the native Colombians felt there was nowhere to get their favourite foods.

“We always complained because we had got into the habit of every weekend going out for an empanada,” she said.

“When you don't have anything to do, it's very culturally Colombian [to] go out and get a bite to eat, or a coffee or something to get you out of the house. Our saying was, ‘If only there was a place to go out and get an empanada, right?’ So my mom was like, ‘We're gonna build that place.’”

First Saskatchewan location for KMS Tools opens in Riversdale

Today the StarPhoenix talks to Rod Markewich, who is the store manager at the first Saskatchewan location for KMS Tools & Equipment that recently opened in the former Giant Tiger Building near 22nd Street West and Avenue F South.

KMS Tools first opened in Coquitlam in 1983. They now have about 17 locations in Alberta and B.C., as well as this new 25,000 square foot Saskatchewan location. They specialize in power, automotive and other tools and offer a price match guarantee with anybody else in Canada. Most products can also be purchased in their online store.

Inside an unassuming building on First Avenue, there is a room dedicated to printing backward and sticky-side-up rhinestone overlays that will eventually be applied to competitive cheerleading uniforms — a product this Saskatoon company specializes in.

“Rhinestone quality control. There, I have a title,” says MEE Sports employee Lil Stuart as she uses tweezers to remove crushed rhinestones and to replace those the machine has missed.

Delhi Guyz brings street foods of India to the streets of Saskatoon

The pair grew up in Delhi, India, but only met four years ago after moving separately to Saskatoon. Each have a background in food and cooking, and became fast friends and dreamt of bringing the popular street food of their childhood to Saskatoon.

First use of excess land at Saskatoon’s airport will be for a new “Tim’s”

Saskatoon is getting a new Tim Horton’s – at the airport. Not “in” but “at” with the opening target of 2027 for 970 45th Street West.

In a news release Stephen Maybury, President & CEO of the Saskatoon Airport, said they had spent many years evaluating the best use of excess land for a commercial project. He says, “This prime location will no doubt enhance the customer experience for our guests and employees, as well as for travelers staying at nearby airport hotels.”

Businesses and non-profit organizations regularly open and move in Saskatoon. Today, the StarPhoenix talks to Kentucky Davidson, who together with his wife Krista, opened Soda Stop in Saskatoon out of a pink trailer last July.

They’ve since moved into a storefront at Gather Local Market in November, serving “dirty soda,” which is soda mixed with syrup flavors and creamers.

It’s a trend that has caught on throughout Canada and the US. When they first opened last year, the Davidsons experienced lineups across the parking lot. They’ve continued to see strong sales since moving downtown.

If Taylor Cross can make an 80-year-old man feel at home in one of her shops, she’s done her duty to Saskatoon’s downtown.

“That’s the goal,” she said, seated at a vintage family heirloom table in the “staff only” portion of one of her shops, The Clubhouse.

“Once you have that happen, you can’t unfeel that feeling when a grandpa, the dad and the son all find banger pieces that they didn’t think that they would find.

“Same with moms, daughters and grandmas,” she said. “That happens at the boutique almost every Sunday.”
