That's in Downtown Detroit, for an arena with hundreds of annual events. This would be a lightly used football stadium on marginal, fringe industrial land.

Also, the Little Caesars Arena was purely an arena play. There's barely any office space, and the non-arena stuff they're forced to build has been epically delayed. It was another taxpayer soak by a jerk owner.

Yep. It's not like anyone is against the Bears building a massive stadium somewhere else in the city where a large entertainment district grows around it. Hell, I'm all for that.

It's one thing if we are talking about tax breaks to spur businesses to invest into vacant land around a new stadium - It's a whole other thing to ask the city/state to subsidize hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure spending. Especially at a time when our budget situation is so strained.

Epic Fail by KW and the Bears. Not only is this site full of toxic chemicals but all of the surrounding sites will be contaminated also. The only quick solution is to pave over for parking. Where will this entertainment area go? Certainly not walk-able distance from stadium HaHa. Site is literally surrounded by Oil and Chemical refineries and storage tanks. ROFL!

So Fi was completely paid for by the owner though. Bears want nothing to do with that. And So Fi is an incredible stadium, Bears would probably build nothing CLOSE to as nice.

I would be stunned if the Bears build in Indiana. Nor did I ever think they were going to build downtown. They're liars and they're grasping at straws to try to bully IL and Arlington Heights into paying for more.

As someone from WI who loves to come down to Chicago, there's just almost no way I'll want to go to NE Indiana. Not that they're building for me personally, but just in terms of connections to hotels and other activities in Chicago, it's a terrible fit. Heck, depending on traffic, someone from the northern suburbs could just about get to Lambeau/Titletown more easily than NE IN. I mean, not literally, but not that far off either.

Indiana Governor On Bears' Stadium: 'We're Going To Do Everything To Make It Happen

"Indiana Gov. Mike Braun is upping the tempo on an aggressive push to lure the Chicago Bears to a new home in the Hoosier State.

Braun said in an interview on 21Alive News the state has had "a lot" of communication with the Bears organization since team President and CEO Kevin Warren announced in December the team was exploring a move to Indiana. The governor said the approach to luring the team has to be methodical and executed when the organization is thoroughly ready.

"We're going to do everything to make it happen," he said."

Indiana just did a clawaback from school districts across the state, costing millions in each community, so that homeowners could see an average of $400 off their property taxes. But yeah, sure, throw $1 billion at the Bears so that Illinois residents can drive less than a mile into the state, park in Whiting 9 times a year, and promptly leave.

Nothing stirs Indiana politicians' blood quite like development projects built on the back of Illinois' economy.

I'm cool with it. New owners will reap the rewards, and once they are flush with cash in 10-20 years, commit to a private buildout of a new stadium in the city along the lakefront. Illinois Bers fans get a new stadium with zero tax payer dollars involved, and Indiana will be stuck paying the bill for a multi billion dollar stadium in the middle of industrial marshland that will have zero potential use...

Could this very well be a bigger danger to Chicago than a just a new stadium? If Indiana is keen on cleaning up the land for a stadium, will they then turn to developing office and business parks to lure businesses out of downtown Chicago with lower taxes and incentives to relocate?

Yeah, but who are they gonna get to relocate there? It's one thing if you move your HQ from the Loop to Shaumburg to avoid a head tax when you know several employees will eventually want a house in the NW burbs.... It's a whole other deal when we are talking about trying to lure talent to either relocate to NW IN or commute there.

If Indiana wants to try to be competitive and lure manufacturing jobs that rely on water transport into their state - I actually welcome that - It would be good competition on that level. And frankly, I think most of us would actually prefer a NW Indiana that isn't a manufacturing graveyard.

The situation with NWI is lot more complex than what you are thinking. While lower taxes is a factor that companies & organizations consider when searching for new office sites, the primary driver for new locations is access to talent. Downtown Chicago is unparallel when it comes to young college educated employees, as the city is a huge magnet for Big 10 grads. The west and northwest suburbs are also a deep well for skilled white collar workers. NWI on the other hand is very blue collar, hard to get to from most of the Chicago metro, and not really a destination for young people out of college.

It would take a great deal of investment from Indiana to truly transform NWI, and I don't see the political will being there from the state politicians. Indiana has and will always prioritize Indianapolis politically and economically. Landing the Bears would be a PR win for local and state elected officials, but a stadium/stadium village alone won't do much for a region that has shed a huge amount of jobs and population over the last 40 years.

That said, NWI remaining a hulking rusting mess isn't good for the region either. Helping the region grow and find a new post-manufacturing life would be beneficial for the Illinois side of the metro as well.

Indiana has been playing the "hey, lets try and steal 🞵🞵🞵🞵 from chicago" game for decades now, with minimal success (mostly just some people moving out to ever more god-forsaken sprawl down in the corn).

Even if the site of the stadium itself gets cleaned up, it would still be a stone's throw from the largest steel mill in the nation and the largest refinery in the nation outside the gulf coast. It's not ever likely to be a super highly desirable area.

This* How will the parking requirements be met? There will be no transit access unlike SF which at least has the 18th Street Metra/SSL station. Will a massive deck be involved? doesn't sound like a tailgaters paradise. So acres of flat open parking? Great tailgating but requires huge swaths of open land, So where will the Entertainment District be? This after all is where IN will reap the consumer spending spill over. Oh Wait! the last Bears proposal for Soldier Field had the Bears receiving large portions of campus revenues from NON Bears events. Do you really think they will not be demanding the majority of Entertainment District revenues? There simply is not enough open and desirable contiguous land to put the 3 components in a walkable environment. Stadium-Massive Parking- Walkable Entertainment District. And anything built will be in the smoke stack shadows of the Refinery and Steel Mill and huge Petro/chemical holding tanks, freight railyards. Sounds lovely.

There are concerns regarding the 49ers and their practice field/stadium being built next to a electrical substation... concerns that the substation may be behind the rash of injuries being suffered by 49er players.
https://thelibertyline.com/2026/01/08/49ers-injury-electrical-substation/

And years ago, a number of NY Giant football players came down with cancer, sparking concerns regarding their football field (The Meadowlands) which was built on a landfill.
https://www.upi.com/Archives/1987/08/23/...ern-about-the-environment/8761556689600/

Despite the fact that there will always be those trying to play down these risks... for example, just like the risks of smoking cigarettes were once dismissed as nothing, despite obvious evidence being put forward of its detrimental effects.... where big money is at stake, there will always be people saying "mere coincidence" while quickly putting out countervailing studies.... but the facts remain -- 49er injuries are unusually high when compared to injuries suffered by other teams... and cancer rates suffered by Giant players were disproportionately high when compared to cancer rates on other teams.

Building on and around the site most likely being looked at in Gary will likely be much worse than the 2 examples I just sited above^. Worse for the players and potentially, the fans. Despite its best remediation efforts, the stadium itself would likely still be a carcinogen playpen of bio-hazardous materials... a virtual radioactive mine field.

I do not see it happening... certainly not at the site they are said to be interested in.

First look: Gary pitches three sites for Bears stadium

The city of Gary, Indiana, has released renderings of three potential sites for a new Chicago Bears stadium...A state bill for funding construction was introduced in Indianapolis after Gov. Mike Braun talked about poaching the Bears away from Illinois in his State of the State speech this week.

It's laughable to think they can support two NFL teams, one of which is in Gary, Indiana. Lucas Oil Stadium and the surrounding area should tell you everything you need to know about how the state of Indiana supports its local team in its largest city. And that stadium was built in the late 2000's. If I were the Colts, I would be calling the Gov., "I hear you have some taxpayer money. Our stadium is coming up on 20 years old. We want some too."

Here's the website, there are too many renderings so I'll just post the three different site options: https://bearstadiumdistrict.com/
