Love the ariel shots as well.
It’s remarkable how evenly (equally) Edmonton has grown in all directions from downtown.

Edmonton, and Prairie cities in general, have this pattern. Very clean and compact compared to the messes in the east.

Ottawa started out with a grid up until WWII, with a few roads that were a bit more angled/curved where paths from the early 19th century connected villages. In the 50s and 60s, we started getting a little more "original" with turns and curves, but still largely grids. Then 70s to today is like a child designed the road network.

Then there's Gatineau with its own mess. Probably didn't help that both Ottawa and Gatineau of today were 16 different fairly significantly sized municipalities prior to 2000/2001 with their own planning departments. The Greenbelt, for better or worse, contributed to the mess and sprawl as well.

Have they considered pedestrianizing that little street to the north of the park? That would give Calgary a terrific public square.

More or less. Here's the 'outer ring road' to see where growth will likely flow over the next century.

It has come up a couple of times in recent years, but the shop owners have come out against it. In the summer they take a lane away and use it for patio space and it helps.

Yeah, it's basically a parking lot and and there's a lane out back.

Pretty epic aerial shot from the Toronto Islands all the way to North York and beyond. From a post last month by davidhucker on reddit last month.

The distance from the waterfront skyline to the end of the North York skyline just above the middle of the photo, is nearly 30 miles (47km).

^ Awesome photo, it's been my desktop wallpaper since I first saw it on reddit, but it's only about 10 miles or 16 km from the Lake to the Northern end of North York's Yonge St high-rise corridor.

Nice shot of Montreal. The panorama has the unintended effect of reducing the buildings verticality though
