Cool.

Our first diverging diamond interchange (slight modification for the bus loop).

The preliminary designs for the highway 11 interchange are a diverging diamond as well. Are there any others in Canada?

The project document says it will be the 4th in Canada.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/transp...ighway11/diverging-diamond-factsheet.pdf

In May 2025 they said the final design was up in the air not sure if it was finalized recently.

Quote:
Meanwhile, in Abbotsford, crews have begun to clear a massive area surrounding Abbotsford’s Highway 1/Sumas Way junction to lay the groundwork for the construction of a new interchange. Preliminary renderings released in 2023 suggested the junction would also be a diverging-diamond intersection, although a provincial spokesperson wrote in an email that the specifics design has not yet been confirmed. The project is still in the procurement phase, and the successful bidder could still pitch an alternative concept.

This one in Niagara opened a few years ago:

I think there is 1 or 2 in Alberta too from what I remember. There are plans for a few more as well across the country from my understanding.

The first DDI in Canada opened on August 13, 2017, at Macleod Trail and 162 Ave. S. in Calgary; followed by one east of Regina in Pilot Butte in 2018 as part of the Regina Bypass project. https://www.google.com/maps/@50.4492816,..._ep=EgoyMDI1MTIwOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

How exactly is this an improvement?
You ever played one of the early Sim City games and you place a road tile next to another road tile in parallel and it doesn't know how to interact with it, so it makes some horrific engineering choice like four 4-way intersections in a row? That's this. This is stupid, just to add a few more places to turn.

From Wikipedia:

Compared to a diamond interchange, the advantages of a diverging diamond interchange are:
  • Two-phase signals with short cycle lengths, significantly reducing delay.
  • Reduced horizontal curvature reduces the risk of off-road crashes.
  • Increases the capacity of turning movements to and from the ramps.
  • Potentially reduces the number of lanes on the crossroad, minimizing space consumption.
  • Reduces the number of conflict points, thus theoretically improving safety.
  • Increases the capacity[46] by removing the need for turn lanes.
  • Can cost significantly less than a traditional diamond interchange.

No left turns across oncoming traffic (as found on diamond and partial cloverleaf interchanges) and no conflict between exiting and entering traffic on the highway (as found on cloverleaf interchanges), while only requiring two signal phases and no yields for the entire interchange.

I have often wondered if 200th Street interchange could be coverted to a DDI, during my twice a day wait at red lights here. To me this interchange seems poor. Maybe it is the lights seem to be on a set timer and are not smart. Quite often there is a green light for 10-20 seconds for no one, yet there is traffic waiting at all other red lights.

It doesn't look like that would be possible without significance private property acquisition.
It would make much sense to anyways as the 88 Ave E & W intersections are still required.

Highway 11 interchange is rewarded. Construction begins this month

https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2026TT0001-000001

Reminder that this is also a diverging diamond interchange.

A concept of the interchange is seen on page 9 of this document:

The diagram on page 9 is difficult to figure out as it is "the new project" in a line drawing over the existing photo.

This diverging diamond will look strange being under the highway, when most are elevated structures, will be interesting to see how it looks and performs once complete.

There's one down in Washington State that goes under the highway

DriveBC 232 Street Webcams Are Down

Just when the 232 Street Interchange is about to see some visual progress, the 232 Street webcams have been down for the last several days.

Girder installation for the 232 overpass should be in progress, overnight lane closures there until the 12th.
