There was a motion today voted on by council to restore the original transit service, it was voted down with Wyatt in favour and the rest of council opposed.

This is a bad idea that would probably be better in the long run imo, especially given the huge drop in fare revenue the the PTN created.

The new network should never have been implemented as is; They should have at minimum ensured they had adequate funding to avoid needing the demand-response —. Probably should also have waited until there was infrastructure to support the FX routes and portage section of Blue. Even the dysfunctional TTC can implement bus lanes and Signal Priority on major roads quickly and cheaply so there's no excuse not too.

The Undertaker on Henderson Highway whose name escapes me at the moment, is making noises about running for mayor and one of his trial balloons is restoring transit back to the previous service.

Vogiatzikziiskzks However you spell it. He's another blowhard on the Facebook groups. It's always something. He writes open letters to the mayor and council, and expects them to respond. Of course not expecting them to actually respond. More of a stunt to say "wow look they cant even respond to me, some random internet guy."

I believe he was part of the Ken Lee tinfoil hat crowd that scuttled the Winnipeg Metro Region plan out of fear that it would take people's cars away and confine them to hunger games style precincts. Crackpot. If he runs for mayor he'll sew up the internet rabbit hole crowd (~ 1.5% of the vote).

The Primary Network definitely has problems and I have certainly been one of the ones complaining about elements of it on here. But I do firmly think that the overall design is good and will get better. The problems are with implementation in the short term, not the overall plan. Reverting would be disastrous.

Agree. Ripping off the bandage can be harsh but the system wasn't sustainable or expandable in its previous incarnation. There are bound to be hiccups and adjustments to be made in the beginning. People are sometimes too eager to cry "fail!"

My "favourite" part of the BS bus-ride-hailing service is how you can walk up to one of those buses at a rapid transit station and you can't board, because it's not really part of the transit service.

You can actually.

"If stopped and someone wants to board the bus, allow them to Book the ride using the +Rider button, explain how the system works, and how to download the app or call 311 so they can do it for themselves next time"

I also saw this fanmade map where the Blue Line would extend to Sage Creek via the University Spur. This would make perfect sense.

I'd love to see light rail in Winnipeg, but I'm wondering about how it might work with the weather here, given all the problems with snow for Ottawa's LRT system. I don't know much about it, but my friends in Ottawa say it's been terrible so far. The LRT can't seem to operate properly in the snowy weather. According to this article, Toronto and Montreal are also having snow related issues. What is going on? These are winter cities. Can LRT be designed to operate better in the snow? I haven't heard of these issues in Calgary, but the weather is a bit different in southern Alberta.

BRT spoke system from the outer lying areas that feeds a central street level tram/streetcar system around downtown.

Basically return to the pre 1950s system we once had.

Its a proven system that works in this city and climate.

^Good point, it's true that the old streetcars seemed to function in Winnipeg's snowy weather. I haven't heard of any snow related issues for Toronto's streetcars either.

Check out this video of a Winnipeg streetcar switchman who kept the tracks free of ice and snow back in the day. I wonder how a modern system would work?

Aren't there still some tracks found under the asphalt out and around downtown? Good thing we didn't take them out fully. Saves us the trouble of re-installing them

We need another study! Then study the study. Then debate the study. And then conclude, yet again, that busses are the only solution. But let's study why that is! /s
