Dr. Witt tried that, but UAH objected, and he withdrew a UA Center from Huntsville. He should have refused. UA should always be the priority. Every state needs to prioritize its flagship, and leaving UA out of the NASA gravy train makes no sense.

This may seem like a minor difference, but it means very much when it comes to factors affecting academic rankings. Graduation rates, retention rates, loan indebtedness, academic culture, etc. are very sensitive to a larger cohort of lower tier students.

Don't even get me started on this. I actually have to go to that God forsaken research building for meetings on occasion and have to drive by, on one of the busiest roads in the city, a billboard every fricking day that advertises for AU. It drives me insane how we refuse to even try to keep up with AU in this town. I understand that we have to play nice with our sister school (UAH) and they get a ton of recognition in this town for the quality of engineers they produce and rightfully so, but I would still think the University could at least combine a research center with UAH. Fricking Georgia Tech has a center here as well. I've worked with engineers who graduated from UA and they are just as good, if not better, than a lot of the AU grads I work with.

I actually applaud AU for taking such initiatives. UA would be wise to utilize opportunities like this and take collaborative efforts to work with AU and UAH to further enhance the economy in North Alabama. Granted, Huntsville's infrastructure needs to grow with the rapidly growing population.

Understandably, AU is our competitor. But I do believe both universities would benefif in coordinated efforts to focus on economic contributions to the northern region.

Easy to do when you're not hamstrung by a sister school

Very true. I can't find the article right now, but Dr. Whitt attempted this years ago, but was basically forced to close it because of push back from UAH campus officials. The reasoning was we have a system campus in Huntsville already, why is a UA research center needed?

I just saw atlanta68's post above, this is to what i was referring, sorry.

The irony is that when Witt tried to get a presence for UA up there, Dr. Karr was the Dean of UA Engineering, but later went on to become UAH's president. Wish we could get Dr. Karr back. I still think he would have been an excellent president for UA.

atlanta, this should make you happy. The University of Alabama will begin requiring test scores as a part of admissions for Fall 2028. RTR

I think that is a positive step. LSU was running into that issue and their alumni were not pleased at all with the admissions process. It made sense at the time but like a lot of things that had to be done almost 6 years ago, does not apply to today.

UA is having another stellar year attracting outstanding students. We closed regular admission on Dec. 5. The University will continue to admit exceptional students. Notice that Auburn closed their early admission (which are the numbers they report to these ranking mags). Now, their regular admissions continue until, at least, Feb. 1. So, some kids who are turned down by UA will end up at Auburn. RTR

Yes, it is great news. I wonder if the new president had something to do with it.

The BOT was going to do it. I thought it would be 2027, but, they wanted a transition year. It will be System-wide. RTR

A new Provost will be hired in the Summer of 2026. He/she will be instrumental in policy, like academic admissions. This link is seeking input from UA Alums. If you want to add your voice to the conversation about what we want in a new Provost, you can do it, here.

All input is important. RTR

Thanks for the link. Who is the outgoing Provost? Why are they leaving or why did they leave? I'm definitely going to contribute

You better believe I shared my input. I encourage everyone else here to demand higher admission standards so the academic reputation of our beloved alma mater be improved and so campus resources can be less thinly spread.

Chad, Dr. Jim Dalton left to become the Chancellor of the LSU System. It was a mutual situation. He's a great guy and did a wonderful job here. It's time to fill a position to work hand in hand with Dr. Mohler. RTR

A great move by the three UA Campuses and the BOT to promote more unity between the "Family". Look for better collaboration in the very near future. RTR
