The Municipality of East Hants is looking at creating a transit system to service it's growing population.
EAST HANTS TRANSIT 2024 REPORT
TLDR version;
- Phase one is a single two-way bus route with hourly frequency.
- Starts at Halifax Stanfield - Hwy 102 - Exit 7 - Trunk 2 through Enfield - Left on 214 (Elmsdale Rd) - Elmsdale Shopping Centre - East Hants Aquatic Centre - Highway 102 - Exit 8A - Kiln Creek Subdivision - East Hants Sportsplex
- New 35-foot battery-electric-bus for the main service with a used diesel bus as a back-up and for midday recharging requirements.
- Phase two is increasing frequency to 30 minutes.
- Use HFXGO for payments and potential transfers agreement with Halifax Transit.
- Tie into Halifax Transit Route 320 at the airport stop.
- Tie into the JRTA proposed 102 Regional Transit route.
Near the end of the report is a map showing future potential transit routes. Three are shown; Nine Mile River Loop, Lantz - Shubenacadie/Sipekne'katik, and Uniacke/Lakelands - Sackville Terminal.
I think this is a good start. I think the key for this to be successful is to integrate it as much as possible with Halifax Transit Route 320. The use of this service by commuters will determine the success. Looking at the timetables it appears a person could leave Scotia Square at 5:15pm and arrive at the East Hants Sportsplex at 6:40pm including a six minute layover at the Airport. That is a long commute by Nova Scotia standards but 50km in 85 minutes is ~35km/h which is good for rush hour transit.
