Yes, although it has been done by both parties.

Even I am going to call that one out.

I interpret it like APL where as soon as you start seeing an otherwise fluid dialect (or programming language) throwing in graphical symbols, you know you are getting into something where the english language isn't in the driver's seat and it's time to start throwing in other characters and symbols to fudge whatever is expressed in a different language.

It's amusing how during the unveiling yesterday, when someone asked the minister of transportation a question regarding cost, they were swiftly told to shut up and appreciate what was happening.

The NDP government didn't pick the name, the Kwantlen and Musqueam nations did. I guess maybe the Kwantlen and Musqueam are pandering to the Kwantlen and Musqueam for using their language?

Yes as mentioned above, but when it is spelled out in a version all can understand.

Yeah, but you know that stal̕əw̓asəm is pronounced "stah-low-wah-sum" so now you know how to pronounce it. Nobody's expecting you to become fluent in reading or writing it, but knowing that stal̕əw̓asəm is "stah-low-wah-sum" takes about five seconds, and you know that that refers to the new bridge.

Can't wait until we do this again with the Massey Tunnel replacement.

Yep, and the same old arguments from people too lazy to take thirty seconds out of their day to learn how a word is pronounced.

It's not that I won't take the 30 seconds to learn. It's that the harder you force it the less people are willing to care.

Having one native name that most can't read and one English name just means everyone is going to call it Riverview Bridge or just continue using Pattullo.

It's very self defeating in the quest for upmost moral purity.
I grew up with my grandmother, who is Coast Salish from Nanaimo, so I tend to take things from her perspective.

The new name in its original form is not even that hard to read, and yet people are up in arms about it.

I guarantee you you're pronouncing and typing all these names "wrong" using English phonology and orthography. Unless you personally type and say X̱ats'alanexw instead of Kitsilano and type and say ᑭᓯᐢᑳᒋᐘᓂ ᓰᐱᐩ instead of Saskatchewan.

If nobody's expecting you to become fluent in reading or writing it, then why have it on the signs? Why not have an English orthography name? I remember when people were up in arms about businesses in Richmond having Chinese only names, and those were private businesses, not public infrastructure.

Haidilao Hotpot recently rebranded to Haidilao Huǒguō, pinyin and all and I sure hope all of you say and type it properly and not "Anglicized". Remember Mandarin is a tonal language, so practice up on your tones.

Because it takes thirty seconds to learn how to recognize and pronounce this one specific word. Just like your hotpot restaurant example, it takes thirty seconds to learn how it's pronounced and then you can pronounce it. Nobody's expecting you to become fluent because fluency isn't required to recognize and pronounce one specific word.

Is it really that hard to say "stah-low-wah-sum"?

It's not one specific word, this process is apparently a continuous one. Do you truly tell yourself that you off the top of your head you're ready to pronounce:

Ch’iyáḵmesh
Sts’áḵ’ay̓s
Spú7ets’
Stamsh
Swá7elt
Ch’iyáḵmesh
Sḵwx̱wú7mesh
Mámxwem
Saẁá7elt
Kwtsá7tsutsin
Kwékwetxwm
Txwn7us
Shisháyu7ay̓
Xwehúy̓shn
Yiyḵ’m
Ch’ax̱áy̓
Énwilh Spálhx̱n
Wéḵw’weḵw’m
Xwáẁchayay
Lhḵ’etksn
Stl’álḵem Staḵw
Nínich Ḵw’litḵm
Ḵw’pel
Ch’ích’iyúy Elx̱wíḵn
K’él’etstn
P’ap’ḵ’
Temlh

Those are just the signs up the Sea to Sky and at least they have English names beside them. We're also now supposed to know these place names in Vancouver:

Xpey̓
wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm
təməsew̓txʷ
ƛ̓éxətəm
təmtəmíxʷtən
sθәqәlxenәm ts'exwts'áxwi7
stal̕əw̓asəm
šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmasəm

Oh, but it's just one one specific name, "just learn it".

No one should say Huǒguō in Mandarin when otherwise speaking English, it sounds ridiculous. This is how I imagine you in 5 years:

People will end up using the easiest word to say/remember. 2nd narrows is what I call that bridge. I don't even use the name of the tunnel because you don't need to.

I'm not sure what this one will end up in common parlance, but if they gave it a quick 2 syllable name in any language, that's what it would become.

Interesting note about the Stolo nation and the naming... too bad we can't call it the Stolo Bridge. That would catch on right away...

Because its just one more example of the BC NDP virtue-signalling their little hearts out on an infrastructure project that is years behind schedule and hundreds of millions over-budget. Can they ever deliver anything on time?

I'm not even going to get into the othermore serious problems their policies are going to cause in this thread.
