For the old school local SSPers, Union Bank Tower was a constant source of discussion and hand-wringing here for the years that it was practically abandoned. It was a prominent symbol of decline given that it was empty despite its historical importance and physical prominence. Its future was in some doubt, especially after the neighbouring Leland Hotel burned down in the mid/late 1990s.

Having Red River College step in and renovate it, and bring it back to life, was seen as a significant step for the Exchange District and downtown Winnipeg as a whole.

Came across this video with tons of 1960s footage of Winnipeg. Loved seeing dt when it was still full of old houses. Also nice to see Main street prior to all the demolition for the museum and concert hall.

Does anyone know what building is shown in the foreground of the old Bird's Eye view drawing of Winnipeg (courtesy of Manitoba Historical Society site)? Looks like it would be located somewhere near where the Louise Bridge crosses into Elmwood.

I've never seen a big building like that shown in other illustrations of the same vintage. It kind of resembles the current St. Boniface Museum (just obviously in the wrong location).

Also, anyone know what the big park at the top right of the drawing would be? Is that supposed to be the original Central Park?

(Also, any tips on how to post the image directly would be appreciated!!)

I've done a bit of searching around and the best I can find for the spot in Elmwood is that there was a pork packing plant that opened there in 1893. I suspect that this map predates it. I looked at the Tribune article that covered the opening of the plant, but it did not indicate what was there before.

As for the park, this map shows that there was a park (or at least reserve for a park) called Dufferin Park in that general vicinity.

I tried to find something about this site, but I can only find aerial photos showing something large there, from ~1900 to the ~1960s.

I downloaded the app earlier today and was looking at some of the historic sites near me. Super cool app with tons of sites that is easy to use. Definitely recommend it to anyone interest in Winnipeg's history.

Was doing some friday afternoon Manitoba Archives surfing 'cause I was bored, and noticed saw that the Curry building was designed to be 8 storeys, but only rose to 2. Anyone know if the foundation was ever built to handle 8 storeys and would anyone be able to build on top of it or does it's national historic designation prevent that? Figured it would be a good project to add some height to downtown.
