A department store can't compete with free, same-day delivery. Plus, I don't have to drive through traffic and find a place to park downtown.
*Yes, I guess you're right about online shopping slowly forcing out big department stores. It is a shame, really, because shopping, especially big department stores, lend vitality to a city centre.

I wonder if Cadillac Fairview might buy it like they did the Hudson's Bay at the south end of Toronto Eaton Centre
(albeit with a tenant at the time and as a means of attracting Saks Fifth Ave. to locate there instead of on Bloor St.)).

I can't see a buyer being allowed to destroy the facade, so it will be interesting to see who buys it and what they do with it. This is the perfect location for a hotel with such close proximity to the Canada Line.

One of the most historically significant and largest retail properties formerly owned by the now-dismantled Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) has been listed for sale.

A joint partnership between commercial real estate firms CBRE Limited and Marcus & Millichap has been appointed to market and oversee the sale of the former Hudson’s Bay flagship department store building, located at 674 Granville St. in downtown Vancouver.

In an announcement today, it is stated that the property is now being listed on behalf of FTI Consulting Canada, which is acting as the court-appointed receiver....

How far along in the design process was the plan with the 12 additional floors of offices and housing? Was it something that has added value for a buyer, or was it a building model and some drawings?

The design probably would have evolved if it was actually going to be built, but it was more carefully detailed as a design than a fancy render. But there's no likelihood of anyone seriously building another million square feet office building in the current market. (Unless Amazon decided to abandon Seattle and move their operation to Vancouver).

Department stores and malls in Asia are still doing well and innovating. The extreme weather helps malls provide cooling in the summer and protection in the monsoons. Vancouver and Canada could get some tips for the former Bay stores. I wonder if Rubi Liu had them in mind with her idea.

Could Vancouver attract an Asian brand? like Lotte or Shinsegae. I do know from reading about some retail issues in Canada that some brands have exclusive rights with certain stores, so that can be hard for another store to be allowed to carry them.

Without The Bay Chanel and several makeup and fragrance brands no longer have a home to sell, I know a handful of Shoppers Drug Marts carry Chanel, but it's nothing fancy. Sephora gets some, but I really hate the whole Sephora experience, it's cramped, it's got pre-teens buying — they don't need lol etc. Really feels a little downmarket these days.

Anyway, this is something you are seeing over in Asia, shopping malls with "experiences" and Instagrammable spots and a lot of space to play or sit, etc. This just opened in Bangkok at Siam Mall, it's called Nextopia and has replaced the upper floors that were previously used as a convention centre. I have to give some kudos to Shape and what it does with Brentwood and Lougheed, they always have events going on and spots for photos etc.

Interesting location opposite a BCL and a Whole Foods with a small wine section.

22,000 sq ft versus The Post's 40,000 sq ft.
The Arbutus CityMarket is 20,000 sq ft.

I never really expected it to open earlier than that, and if it had been scheduled for earlier then they were being a tad too optimistic, methinks.

People are now living in the apartments above it.. there's no reason why it couldn't be open already.

On a somewhat related note, confirmed that FreshCo is opening in the Toys R Us space on Broadway, just down the street...
