Some more clarity in the CBC article.

Quote:
A $4-million ball hockey complex is being built in an industrial park on the east side of Saint John — two years after it was approved for construction in a residential neighbourhood on the city’s west side.

In October of 2023, city council voted to approve a location on Manawagonish Road on the west side, despite objections from some nearby residents worried about excessive noise as the complex was slated to include an outdoor and indoor playing surface.

Even though Quebec-based company, Knapper, had received the go ahead from council, the team returned to its Montreal-area offices concerned about the area residents, and changed their minds about locating the complex, which would also include a small pub, on Manawagonish Road.

“We came back to the office and just thought about it and said, 'Even though we got the vote …Knapper is a respected company, and wants to be respected by the people,'" said Patrick Bazinet, the president of Knapper Partners Investment Fund.

"So we decided to look for [another site].”

McIlveen Drive, which is at the very south of the industrial zone, roughly where I have circled below.

There is a committee of the whole item at tonight's council meeting regarding an update on the property JN Lafford Realty Inc is purchasing at 324 Charlotte Street:

"Amended and restated agreement of purchase and sale at 324 Charlotte Street".

The 421 Woodward Avenue development has just passed the 1st and 2nd reading tonight despite the opposition at the public hearing.

From Save Lorneville on FB:

I'm not sure they saw the irony in this statement before they posted it. 😅

Some NIMBY's on the West Side got the developer to change course on their plans to open the facility on the West Side... and now it's going to be built in... an industrial park.

I think it's too bad they felt locating this facility in an industrial park was the only way for it to avoid the NIMBYs. It could be been a more impactful location if it was more centrally located, but it's good to see it's still happening at least.

Would be nice to see the city build an outdoor rink for Lorneville within the buffer zone between the community and the expanded industrial park.

421 Woodward passed 1st and 2nd reading. Rock breaking starts fall of 2026, with building construction starting 2027. Jody K. from Envision SJ noted population growth in Saint John slowed in 2025 compared to the previous three years, but suggested we need to keep our foot on the gas residential wise because they expect it to pick up again with companies potentially moving to Saint John. Companies inquire on availability of housing.

Who and how many voted in favour? Did the height reduction satisfy them, or were there still councillors who were unhappy?

Did anyone see or understand another item about selling a piece of property 75 Smythe St / right of first refusal sell under a lease agreement to an NB numbered company the assignee to Hardman Group? I’m not catching what they are saying. That’s the Hilton Hotel. Maybe that has something to do with dropping Hilton management and marketing.

To be fair, my goalie school for hockey was in an industrial park inside a small warehouse building where they had a small ice surface for lessons.

I think it does have something to do with it.

AllNewBrunswick just published a new article with the headline: "New Operator, New Name For Only SJ Waterfront Hotel". Don't have access to see the article's content.

Well, InnVest Hotels owns the hotel but maybe there is some complicated stuff going on with ground leases or something.

I see they just announce a major overhaul for the Algonquin ( https://innvesthotels.com/news/11-14-202...sort-embarks-on-landmark-transformation/ ) Maybe there will be some good news coming for the ex Hilton?

The city owns the hotel. Elias is acquiring the lease. InnVest seems like they will keep operating it.

I am curious to read the paperwork for this once it's uploaded, but my first reaction is that this is positive and there is still something in the works. The radio silence on this since the summer had me concerned.

I also noticed this was posted today. They want to rezone and separate the land where the entrance to the Fernhill Cemetery is for commercial use.

As the second red zone deadline recedes into the past, 18 encampments remain (per the city), 15 people total have moved to sanctioned yellow zones, and a dozen vacancies remain at the 54 tiny home units.

Apparently there are 'complex needs' and 'special arrangements' for certain individuals that can only be met by... living in a tent in Waterloo Village and environs. Not sure what those could be. Apparently city staff are FORBIDDEN from accompanying Fresh Start to encampments because of 'privacy and confidentiality concerns.' Nice to finally have clarity on Fresh Start's supremacy over city government. They're also not providing the city data after grudgingly doing so earlier in the fall.

Brain trust on council seems to be finally cluing in, but they're most likely banking on bad weather to kick the can until spring.

OK, perhaps I misunderstood. I thought InnVest has owned the hotel since 2006 and had a branding/management contract with Hilton for them to operate it.

From the Nov 27 Unifor press release.......

Earlier today, Unifor met with the Hilton Hotel General Manager, along with their director of Human Resources where we were advised that the Hilton brand and management of the property will end at the end of January 2026. However, we have been assured the facility will continue to operate as an independent hotel.

This afternoon, the Hilton Saint John Hotel, along with its ownership group – InnVest Hotels – held town-hall meetings with the purpose of reviewing details of this new arrangement.
