As for the glass addition, a floor was added before, so it's not completely new. The metal clad building in the right, was that part of the old Eaton's? That one doesn't look right, new restoration I mean.

The facade bricks, at least, are replicas. The originals were not in a fit state to be used.

I don't mind the new brick but the way the glass addition on top overhangs the old building feels kind of oppressive. Normally these kinds of additions are set back so as to not overwhelm the original structure.

Better than a demolition in any case.

I think the overhang is an illusion. Looks flush to me. That said, set-back would be better, like Ogilvy's in Ottawa - original 1916 bricks to replicate 1908 facade + original windows + original spandrels, replicated cornice and centre madallion, original concrete and steel structure behind was fully demolished for a modern concrete building. Notice the floor cutting through 1/3 of the third floor windows.

Our National War Memorial's refurbishment is on schedule, supposedly. Everything has been cleaned and repaired, a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been added, that back interaction with Duckworth Street has been extensively reworked, and it should open to the public on Memorial Day, July 1. Princess Anne (patron of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment) has a concussion and had to cancel - it's the first big thing (100th anniversary) related to this memorial that she's missed in her lifetime.

I was randomly google streetviewing Toronto and I came across this house that was getting some work done on it this past summer and I wondered what it looked like before so I went back to the previous street view and holy 🞵🞵🞵🞵! What a stunning job this developer did!

I could be wrong, but I think that might be replacement brick on the right hand side one. It looks to be in too good shape to be original.

The developer will close on the property at the end of May and plans to begin construction in June to transform a pre-Confederation stone building into a boutique hotel and a red-brick building next door into residential rentals as well as office space.

The deal has been about a year and a half in the making and Core Urban is now working on heritage and planning approvals and building permits from the City, says the company’s co-owner Steve Kulakowsky.

Hamilton is in need of a memorable boutique hotel downtown, he says.

The property, with a total of 100,000 square feet is right across from the library and farmers’ market and a half-block from the Hamilton Arena, now undergoing a $290-million redevelopment.

The work so far is happening in conjunction with the TD Coliseum renovation across the street...

an update on the project from me today -work is in full swing. The stone building is pre-confederation, with portions dating to 1856.

The building has been abandoned for about a decade now after Coppley moved to a new building down the street. The 60-room hotel and apartments will go a long way to making this stretch of York Street more lively and attractive, especially if the adjacent Salvation Army can be moved.

Hintonburg Pump House in Ottawa, just before crossing the bridge to to the Lemieux purification plant (opened in 1932). The building was built in 1899 and burnt down in 1989, and somehow made it 35 years before restoration of what was left.

The F.X. Drolet plant was built in 1908 right next to the Saint-Charles river, allowing ships to be dry-docked and repaired at that location.

The plant is abandoned in the 60's until the city decides to lightly restore it in the 90's in order to use it basically as a municipal garage.

A more thorough renovation is set in motion a few years ago to transform the aging building into a municipal court.
