Provo is the closest thread so I'll post this here.

Here is the Intermountain Power Plant as of yesterday:

The new Combined-Cycle gas plant visible in the foreground is complete and is scheduled to start next week. The Coal units will then be indefinitely idled unless The State can find a suitable buyer, which is beginning to seem unlikely.

Thanks for this update Rockies. This is more of what I'd like to see for the Tri-City Old Main's of Pleasant Grove, American Fork, and Lehi. This look and massing fits in nicely with Pleasant Grove's Historic Main. American Fork especially needs to finally get its Main Street act together, especially now that it's experiencing a population boom.

Breeze Airways Adds 6 More Flights from Provo Airport

https://www.ksl.com/article/51347609/bre...s-out-of-provo-as-it-continues-to-expand

All are nearby West Coast cities + Vegas, and exciting to see Provo Airport continue to expand its operations. And with UVX being extended there next year in August, the capacity to grow will be fun to follow.

Good news, but to be fair, it's really only 2 new nonstop flights. one to vegas and one to burbank. The other cities are one stops

Utah city photos from today

This must be the fastest built development in recent years. Looks very different from just a month or so ago and tons of activity. Probably some of the best looking as well.

Bella's Market - grocery store on main st. This seems to be standard grocery store format, I guess I was expecting a bit more urban

South of bend st

North of broad st

Also lots of work occurring on park/plaza spaces, very wide sidewalks and paths getting put in everywhere as well

Southern Metro Update - LIVE CAM SHOTS OF TODAY - B.Y.U. Provo Campus - New Harris Fine Arts Center

Today's LIVE STREAM Construction From 3 Perspectives

https://cfac.byu.edu/arts-building

The New Fine Arts Building will also host academic spaces, galleries, performance spaces, media viewing rooms, a cinema and a production studio. The other current occupant of the HFAC — the School of Music — has moved to the new music building.

“The arts and music programs are beacons of excellence for the university,” said Shane Reese, BYU academic vice president, in the release. “We look forward to these two new beautiful buildings, which will accentuate the amazing talents of our students, faculty and staff who work in that college.”

The arts building will house a large collaborative hub for department of design students as well as multiple art and design galleries. There will also be a combination lobby and student gathering space.

A six-station lactation room will accommodate students and their families as well as patrons.

“The new building will create proximity and more opportunities for collaboration and student mentoring,” said Ed Adams, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications. “Our faculty and staff are now spread over five floors and are located at the far ends of the Harris Fine Arts Center from each other.”

The project is expected to be completed toward the end of 2025.

Big D Construction has been selected as the general contractor for the project, with HKS Architects as the architecture firm.

The college will temporarily occupy the former Provo High School, located on University Avenue, while the new arts building is being constructed.

The HFAC was dedicated in 1965 and houses four of the college’s six academic units. The newly completed School of Music, which also used the building has moved into the new music building upon its completion at the end of 2022.

Southern Metro - New College of Engineering and Technology - Utah Valley University - Orem

Logan Stefanich for the Deseret News - Full Article @ https://www.yahoo.com/news/utah-valley-u...Fbwg3ncyIIeYw_0VbXYJcNdgMognMppf2XtbAJeI

...The new Scott M. Smith College of Engineering and Technology Building is named after Qualtrics co-founder Scott Smith...

...During the 2022-23 academic year, over 100 UVU students earned a degree in engineering. Now, the Scott M. Smith College of Engineering and Technology is home to 6,119 students, according to UVU President Astrid Tuminez.

"For the past five years, engineering programs have been borrowing space across campus," said Keith Mulberry, associate dean for academic affairs within the Smith College of Engineering and Technology. "Our faculty have been innovative in delivering high-quality education with limited resources, equipment and space."...The new 180,000-square-foot, $88 million building will increase the square feet per student from 12 square feet to 60 square feet...

...The building will be equipped with smart sensors to monitor structural loading, heat gain and heat loss, and vital internal and external environmental factors. It will use virtual and augmented reality to educate students and visitors about cybersecurity, structural design, building heating and cooling needs, human thermal comfort, indoor and outdoor air quality, water and energy consumption, and waste and sustainability, according to the university.

"This is not just a building but it's an experiment," Smith said. "There are sensors in this building which have virtual and augmented reality and combine artificial intelligence so you can learn and you can make the building operate better. That's pretty remarkable to do that."

Along with the smart sensors, the new building will provide:

• Enhanced, collaborative learning environments using modular and flexible furnishings and spaces to accommodate emerging technologies.

• Experiential educational spaces and program-specific classrooms and labs that allow for hands-on learning experiences.

• Manufacturing facilities with designing, testing, and fabrication capabilities.

"You don't really teach engineering, let's say just purely online. People have to tinker. And so, the lab spaces and the technology are really important because that makes the learning experience come alive beyond the book," Utah Valley University President Astrid S. Tuminez said...

Southern Metro - Huntsman Cancer Institute Center - Vineyard

By Jacob Nielson For The Provo Daily Herald - Full Article @ https://www.heraldextra.com/news/2025/ap...-center-in-vineyard-a-radical-expansion/, Huntsman representatives and political and education leaders broke ground on the new center Tuesday afternoon in front of hundreds of attendees, and Peter Huntsman’s vision for it is similar to his father’s.

...Huntsman representatives and political and education leaders broke ground on the new center Tuesday afternoon in front of hundreds of attendees
“As we look here in Vineyard, I believe there are children that may well see these buildings someday being made redundant,” he said during the groundbreaking. “The research may very well change to Alzheimer’s, very well may change to something other than cancer.”

Scheduled to open in 2028, the plan is to build a 272,000-square-foot cancer center with a five-story clinical care building and a three-story research building in the Utah City development in Vineyard.

With a price tag of $400 million, it’s one of the largest investments the Huntsman Cancer Institute has ever made...

... The foundation hopes the new facility will ease the travel burden for cancer patients in the Southern CSA of Utah County and parts of rural Utah and expand the size of Huntsman’s research programs.

The plan is to work alongside the University of Utah, Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University to put the cancer center on the forefront of research and innovation, offering access to clinical trials, computational science and data analysis programs that utilize artificial intelligence,” Peter Huntsman said...

Southern Metro Update, Rock Canyon Temple - Provo

The current Provo L.D.S. Temple — with its planned demolition & reconstruction including a major redesign and extensive exterior overhaul will close at the end of the day on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024. Reconstruction of the new Temple, pictured immediately below will begin soon after. With the reconstruction of the current Temple seismic concerns will be addressed. Also, a priority is the necessity of being able to accommodate the current overly crowded schedule of one of the busiest World Temples in the L.D.S. Church.

This three-story, 81,000-square-foot temple will be built on a 13.3-acre site at the intersection of N 800 West and W 100 North. As of November 21, 2024, Utah has 31 temples announced, under construction, under renovation, or in operation

Really glad to see the many projects happening on Lehi's Old Main. I see where Pleasant Grove is completing some cool construction on its historic Main also. Now if only American Fork will finally get its act together. There's so much that could be done on that historic section of Main/State St. that runs through the heart of American Fork.

It does seem like a lot of the historic town centers in the greater Wasatch Front are building up there walkable town centers. Places like Midvale, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, Sugar House and others continue to add projects each year. Of course, it can never happen fast enough, but still the progress is encouraging.
