I really love that the coroner is interested in the role of vehicle weight and speed in injuries and fatalities. There are a lot of ebikes that are way too heavy and go way too fast. If you're struck by a 120 kg ebike going at 50 km/h, that's gonna hurt.

You can go play with a kinetic energy calculator to see how much exactly it would hurt.

Some fun examples:

Getting hit at a max-weight ebike at double the legal e-assist speed limit is the same kinetic energy as:
  • being hit by an F150 at 10 km/h
  • being hit by a Toyota Yaris at 16 km/h
Getting hit at an average-weight ebike (22 kg) at the 32 km/h that they're limited to is equivalent in impact to:
  • being hit by an F150 at 2.9 km/h
  • being hit by a Toyota Yaris at 4.3 km/h
Getting hit by a Yaris doing 40 km/h is equivalent to:
  • a max-weight ebike doing 125 km/h
  • an average-weight ebike doing slightly less than a brisk 300 km/h

Their priorities are right where they need to be, thank goodness.

Cars aren't normally being driven on the exact same path as pedestrians....So yeah unironically better regs are needed for what are essentially motorcycles being driven through a loophole onto paths where motorcycles should not exist.

Yes, you're right. Pedestrians never cross busy intersections and cars never ever hit pedestrians.

Not saying we shouldn't look into e-bikes and provide clearer definitions, but it's frankly insulting that these few incidents triggered such recommendations while much higher death tolls caused by ridiculously large motor vehicles are always shrugged off.

Lime to take over some e-scooter operations in Canada from Neuron amid acquisition

The Canadian Press
Published: July 06, 2026 at 1:46PM EDT

The Canadian arm of e-scooter service Lime says it has acquired rival Neuron Mobility Canada Ltd. and will take over the company’s operations in several cities.

Rachel Rappaport, Lime Canada’s senior regional lead of government relations, refused to reveal the value and structure of the deal struck between the two businesses, which offer competing e-scooter and e-bike rentals.

However, Lime says the transaction will see it take over Neuron’s operations in 12 Canadian cities and regions.

The locations include Calgary, Lacombe, St. Albert, Beaumont, Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake, Red Deer and Airdrie in Alberta, as well Saskatoon and Regina in Saskatchewan and Waterloo and Ottawa in Ontario.

Following a brief transition period, Lime says it will assume operations from Neuron on a city-by-city basis throughout the coming months and will ultimately operate its own infrastructure under the Lime brand.

Neuron Mobility was founded in Singapore in 2016 and is best known for its bright orange bikes and scooters.

Hopefully the consolidation can lower their costs. I think with lower prices they might be able to increase revenue as the current prices make the product unusable for actual transport. Almost always cheaper to take an Uber and unless you are super late the 5 minute to save a 10 minute walk trade off from the last transit stop isn't good value for most. In other cities they are a great feeder to transit. A lot quicker and easy than bike share for example. I know they can be dangerous but the absolutely draconian rules on where they can go also limit usefulness. As is the ridiculous idea you should use a shared helmet when riding them.

If anything, with less competition, prices will go up.

If ever we re-implement bike share, I'd want to see these scooters go honestly.
