Irving is always holding the sword if Damocles over the head of Saint John. They will always do what they want.

I don't disagree in terms of contemporary times. In reality though, Saint John has been around a lot longer than any Irving company. The city will still be here when they are gone.

[QUOTE=Pugsley;10510006]Hello everyone! After seeing some of the posts here related to re-purposing the south port area into the Uptown, I thought I would pull out some work I did a long time ago for a master-plan for the area. I spent a few hours "dressing it up", but anyhow, here is what I had come up with many moons ago as a revitalized district, known as Southport. Enjoy!

This is fantastic! Such a fun ideas that would absolutely help the density down that area of the south end.

Thanks, I have another called Harbourside. Will post that this week or next. For the land north of Market Square.

You ever cook up something for the Lower West Side, Pugsley? 👀

No, but I can add that to my list. I've had ideas for Partridge Island I have sketched over the years.

Cool!

I've been working on something myself for Partridge Island (including it as part of the pitch for Rockwood Park to become New Brunswick's first Urban National Park).

I think such a strategy could be one of the few ways we could actually obtain the federal funding needed to properly open up the island to the public, and the timing could be perfect with Carney's plan to open 15 new national urban parks (of which 7 short listed locations have already been chosen).

Interested, of course, to see your ideas for the island!

19 Anglin Drive

Extract from the documentation below. It appears they are intending to use modular designs from Maple Leaf Homes. It is great to see a Made-in-NB development like this.

Quote:
Dear Members of the Planning Advisory Committee:

Atlantic Community Housing Ltd. is a non-profit housing provider. It is our intent to convert this existing vacant baseball diamond, formerly known as Anglin St Ball Diamond, into four new apartment buildings, each comprising 18 units. The 18-unit buildings will be a mixture of one- and two-bedroom apartments with 2 apartments in each building meeting barrier free requirements. This project aims to provide affordable rental housing for both
current residents and newcomers to the City of Saint John, NB.

The proposed three-storey apartments will be modern, energy-efficient, and affordable. They will feature thoughtful design and material choices to create, safe, comfortable and functional apartments at a lower cost. Our focus will be on affordable construction, communal outdoor spaces and essential modern amenities like in unit washer and dryer rather than luxury features.

We believe this project will bring numerous benefits to the community, including increased housing availability, enhance property values, use of currently underutilized surplus city owned land, and use of existing infrastructure. We are committed to working closely with the Planning Advisory Committee, City Staff and the local residents to ensure that this development meets the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.

Erik de Jong (President Atlantic Community Housing Ltd.)

There are abandoned ball fields scattered throughout the city. A relic from when SJ had 90,000 in 1971 and kids left the house to play until the street lights came on.

Barry Ogden pitches tram service, upgrades to Fort Howe, and new wharf for riverboats

Barry's reposted quite a few times over the past week, but I can't find it anywhere else online. I guess it was only on TV.

Video Link

He also wants to reopen the old "Rockland Road" and create a new space to recognize the Wabanaki Peace and Friendship Treaties, as has been mentioned on here already.

I think I'd rather see some publicly funded housing developments squeezed in on that old Rockload Road and name the buildings after important places in the Wabanaki Confederacy.

As for his claim that Saint John has the largest collection of 19th century and Victorian homes in North America... I'd be pretty shocked if Saint John actually has more 19th century and Victorian homes than San Francisco.

Per capita, Saint John probably has more... but in total? I doubt it.

An interesting observation is that it does not show as sold on the property assessment site. I assume there is some kind of conditional sale based on the development being approved or beginning.

Last I checked, the two lots down by Tin Can Beach that Lafford was interested in are still showing no sale, too.

Were there any other lots that were deemed surplus recently? I think the Millidgeville fire station was one, and that now has something in the works.

City to incentivize high rise development

https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-2...6-city-incentivize-high-rise-development

Quote:
"Mayor Donna Reardon speaks with host Emily Brass about the hopes she has that Saint Johners will get behind high rise development because that type of dense development requires less city services for a greater number of people, meaning more annual tax dollars for less city expenditure".

Would be sure nice to see the city attract developers to the city to make the "height option" from the new plan for the North End (second option below) a reality:

Saint John could have some of the nicest high rise views in all of Canada, the city is bounded by water in almost every direction. Saint John is also Canada's 5th largest coastal CMA.

The city and region, in a country with one of the hottest property markets on earth, should be attracting developers from all over the world to invest in the skyline of Canada's oldest city.

Hope the city can continue to find new ways to grow upwards.

Mayor Reardon's got my vote again if incentivizing high rise developments is a top plank in her platform. Though, probably time for a new slogan if so.

"Small City, Big Heart" doesn't exactly call out to high rise investors and developers.

I've always loathed that slogan. It undersells Saint John. Looks us looks like a rinky dink operation to investors out of town, and frankly if it disappeared yesterday it would not be soon enough. I've always been partial to. "Discover our past, discover your future" or something like that. The current one simply screams, we can't be bothered to grow, we are le tired. But hey - we have a big heart. Screams "backwards and can't be bothered" even though that's not the case anymore with Saint John. It's going places, but that motto - has GOT to go ASAP.

Posted over on Facebook. Knapper announced they are opening a ball hockey facility in the McAllister Industrial Park Spring 2026. This is their first location in the Atlantic provinces.

To be frank. All the people who have been in positions of marketing for the city need to be fired. Saint Awesome was equally embarrassing. These people know nothing lol.
