Great to see projects coming to completion in Saskatchewan as their central areas got slammed in the last census so looking forward to updated numbers in 2026.

Seriously? I know this is called Skyscraper Page, but we don't really have many of those happening. Admittedly, the concrete wall is not the most inspired update, but I think most people interested in design and construction would be far more interested in this house's extremely unusual and unique composition, rather than more posts about strip malls and stick-frame apartments.

AllSaskatchewan with the scoop this morning that St. John's Cathedral on Spadina is subdividing their land to sever the area with the parish hall and parking lot, and combine it with Remai land to the south, to assemble a site for a proposed "cultural project" rumoured to be a new home for the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.

AllSask reports that the orchestra, backed by "wealthy local donors" is aiming to build a new concert venue.

That's exciting. A modern riverfront concert hall could not only add to downtown as a whole, but could stimulate some higher quality residential along this strip of Spadina (such as Meridian's Spire, something on the lot between Parktown & the Ukrainian Museum, Star Phoenix Redevelopment).

Not sure if All Sask has their wires crossed or if I'm misreading the documents on the Heritage Committee meeting, but it seems like the church wants to subdivide it's property (the immediate church site) from the lands immediately south and west of the church.

While AllSask seems to interpret it as the church creating two separate lots to sell, I'm reading it as the church combining all the land that is not the church to sell as one large, oddly-shaped lot, to be combined with the three Remai lots to the south. This would be cool if true, as then the concert hall could fit nicely on the land adjacent to Spadina, leaving the large piece of land (parking lot) west of the church and adjacent to the Star Phoenix building for a possible residential tower? Or vice-versa?

All speculation. But based on googling 'Modern Concert Halls' and seeing the awesome buildings that pop up, often alongside or below new housing, I can't wait to see the plans for this lot or these lots. Combined with the Remai Modern and the new Central Library, and a possible DEED in the farther future, downtown is looking UP.

I assume it might be Remai that is behind the concert hall. If it is, that is fantastic for the Symphony and Saskatoon. However, the Persephone Theatre building, funded by Remai, although very functional, is certainly nothing architecturally inspiring. If it is Remai looking to back the Concert Hall, I hope it is a legacy build!

This is kind of a blow to TCUP, as the symphony is likely a pretty important tenant to them, and they are already struggling revenue wise.

I was thinking Remai as well! I think the Persephone was built and designed by the Persephone Theatre organization, with the Remai family providing funding in a large enough volume to get naming rights.

But I don't think the Remais were behind the design of the project. Similar to the Remai Modern not actually being designed by the Remais but instead was a city project with naming rights granted after Ellen Remai's large contributions.

Hopefully this rumoured Concert Hall project would be more in line with the art gallery than the Persephone in terms of vision, scale, and cultural impact. Exciting times. Annoying that AllSaskatchewan is breaking these stories (WerkLiv on College, StarPhoenix residential tower, etc.) but are behind a paywall.

Great find, Echoes! Would love to know what the proponents have in mind for seating capacity of a new venue. Saskatoon could use a bona fide concert hall with 500-1,000 seats, in my opinion.

Saskatoon to see 120 new rental homes built with $38M commitment from feds

Saskatoon will see the construction of 120 new rental homes as the federal government continues to make funding announcements related to its recently announced budget.

Bucky Belanger, secretary of state for rural development, announced Wednesday that $38.3 million in funding was being committed for a stacked townhome development in the city, which will be known as Aurora Pointe.

The development will be located at 102 Henry Dayday Rd. in the Aspen Ridge neighbourhood.

Closing in on Edmonton

The price for an average house in Saskatoon has passed Winnipeg and is nipping at Edmonton’s heels. The projected cost of an average house in Saskatoon has soared to $397,300 this year, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation numbers.

That surpasses Winnipeg ($392,500) and is just behind Edmonton ($412,500).

Yes. It's going to be a wonderful project from what I've heard. International top quality of acoustics, which I know some of the backers had traveled to and researched other top facilities in the world. As mentioned likely in the 750-1000 seat mark - which is sorely needed in the city. Super exciting for TuneTown!

I don't see how 750-1000 seats is enough for the SSO. They regularly sell out in their current home and that is just over 2000 seats.

I think you might mean the former garden at 509 12th, where Modus Ventures was planning an office building! I don't recall a community garden on the gravel lot behind Broadway Roastery/5 Corners Cafe, where Highpoint was to be.

On a similar note, I saw activity on the 509 12th site yesterday! Seems to be lots of earth moving as well as some new shipping containers and equipment on site. Any updates on whether this is going ahead? I know they hit pause this spring until they could find a tenant after their main one pulled out.
