Transat really is doing interesting things and taking real chances. I am sure the feed helps from Porter, but Montreal just has a different make up as well. Transat next year, heading to Medellin, Agadir, Rio and Dakar. That is pretty remarkable for a airline like Transat.

Wouldn't be surprised if they decide to upgauge YUL-DSS to an A330 as well. Cargo will be tight on an A321LR. Those auxiliary fuel tanks in the cargo hold take up a lot of room, and the route will surely be bag heavy. It all depends how the bookings go these next couple of months. I think if TS sees healthy bookings with a lot of bag payments, or upgrades to 32kg bags, then an upgauge in equipment might be warranted. The A330 will enable TS to fly in other cargo as well, which, in/out of Africa, is always a lucrative business.

Interesting article on aviation week, with some numbers to West Africa:

https://aviationweek.com/air-transport/a...ds-a321lr-network-senegal-iceland-routes

Quote:
Although Montreal has year-round service to North Africa—Algiers, Casablanca, Marrakech and Tunis—there are currently no nonstop routes linking Canada with West Africa, despite a total Canada-West Africa market of 346,000 passengers in 2024.

Montreal-Dakar alone generated 27,000 two-way passengers last year, according to Sabre Market Intelligence data, making it the third-largest Canada-West Africa city pair. In the absence of nonstop flights, Casablanca, Paris and Lisbon were the top one-stop markets.

Canada’s Senegalese community has expanded steadily, with about 10,000 people of Senegalese origin counted in the 2021 census and more than 4,000 Senegalese students enrolled in Canada as of late 2023. Other French-speaking West African diasporas are also sizable, including those from Ivory Coast (18,800), Cameroon (18,500) and Guinea (6,500).
I had read from another source that YUL-DSS was 37,000 in 2023. Either way, those are healthy numbers, and if the fares are high enough, the route should work.

Seems like WS is intending to serve Colombia

https://www.aerocivil.gov.co/loader.php?...7a820fb619db9478a6f1ae8cc&fileItem=29543

They've requested 4x weekly YYZ-MDE on a 7M8.

I figured their first venture into mainland Colombia would have been at CTG.

Looks like AC requested for 42 weekly slots for DUB this summer from May to October (up from 32 last year). This is enough for 3 daily round-trips. Perhaps YVR and YUL both going daily with XLR?

Although the seat count of 12,516 means 3x daily round-trip with 789, but I don't think both YVR and YUL can sustain daily flight with widebody. Perhaps AC is planning a new route? Or maybe they'll upgauge YYZ to 77W and fly some or all flight from YVR/YUL with XLR.

WS, on the other hand, requested 44 weekly slots, up from 42 this year. So one of the route will get one additional frequency next summer.

Probably additional YYZ frequencies. It was increased to 11x weekly last summer.

Speaking of WS, some of the planned new destinations are not at all on my radar. Nothing has been finalized yet so won’t give them away. But I will say, I wonder if they’ll be using Sunwing vacations for summer trips too.

WS is showing 46 weekly slots in/out of DUB from June 15 to Sept 6.

I see for new destinations:
YYZ-MDE
YYZ-CWL
YYZ-PDL

YHZ-CPH
YHZ-LIS
YHZ-MAD

But the map seems buggy though. I get different results when I keep switching between the Origin...

Funny how they trying to "hide" the new destination by not showing the name of the city, but that's exactly how I can tell which one is new and which one is existing destination. Maybe there are more that already have the name displayed...

OK, I typed it wrong.. increase from 44x to 46x weekly. Either way, WS is only getting slot for one additional round-trip to DUB.

I think it also pulls some connectors too, cause it also shows YWG-GLA/KEF.

Is GLA within MAX range from Western Canada?

Yes but the 6 routes above only shows up for one of the origin, so they probably haven't processed connection yet.

KEF is doable from Western Canada using MAX, but GLA is unlikely... FI fly YVR-KEF with MAX and that was probably close the maximum range. YWG-GLA is slightly longer, and YEG-GLA is much longer.

The map also shows many European destinations from YVR, or Tokyo from YYZ... so yeah it definitely include connections.

They already fly YYC-KEF using a MAX. I also got YYC-GLA to show up too.

This just might be the first announcement that didn't really feature YYC (although I guess its too early to say on that). Be also interesting to see where they got that LIS slot from. JetBlue ain't gonna be happy.

The fact that PDL is on there leads me to believe these are codeshares.

Azores already flies YYZ/YUL from PDL, and is a WS codeshare partner.

All of the other dots are already WS destinations, and no other codeshare destinations pop up.

YVR-KEF is 3080nm
YWG-GLA is 3132nm

May depend on winds and such, but I’d think that with more legal alternates, GLA could be technically possible.

I think it’s most likely a connection, however. If WS tried a YWG route of that range, I’d say DUB (3166nm) is about 10x as likely. And with SNN as alternate, it would also be no larger of a range circle needed.

Either way, i'd take that map with a grain of salt.

LIS has no slots, and YYZ-PDL or YWG-KEF/GLA aren't exactly gaping holes in anyone's network.

A bit crazy to think that WS will be serving ADZ and MDE before BOG or CTG.

WS has taken down the route map page. Leads me to believe at least some of that is true.

They seem to have a habit of spoiling its new destinations on its website.

Guessing CTG will come next winter.

Not even AC serves MDE. TS does though I think.

Most of them make sense.

MAD, CPH, GLA, wanting LIS, etc...

PDL is a bit out there....but then again, so is MDE.

Yes, TS started MDE (via CTG) on Nov 2. They will do the same with YUL as of May.

Wonder if WS will be doing the same? A tag via CTG that is. Like i said, a non stop to MDE alone is bit wild for Westjet. BOG should be served first and foremost one would think.
