Also, the Ohio River is currently experiencing its most dramatic flood since 1997 and The Boat Rater captured this unbelievable sight tonight:

The water is moving very fast right now, with tons of trees and man-made junk floating along with it. I was down there today and assumed that commercial traffic had been halted, yet we see no fewer than three towboats pushing a tow upriver, something I had never seen or heard of.

The various flood gates have been closed:

Inside the EV startup secretly backed by Jeff Bezos

By Sean O'Kane
Tech Crunch
April 8, 2025

"Jeff Bezos is funding a secretive EV startup based in Michigan called Slate Auto that could start production as soon as next year, according to multiple sources and documents that link the billionaire’s family office to the startup.

Slate, which took root in another Bezos-connected company called Re:Build Manufacturing, has been operating quietly since its founding in 2022. The company has hired hundreds of employees while in stealth — many of whom come from Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, and Harley-Davidson.

It also attracted the backing of several other wealthy individuals, including Mark Walter, the controlling owner of the LA Dodgers and CEO of Guggenheim Partners, and Thomas Tull, who is a lead investor of Re:Build Manufacturing, according to documents TechCrunch obtained from Delaware’s Division of Corporations..."

Not the Onion…

Umm, isn’t carbon dioxide one such substance?

“Signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in June, the law prohibits the release of any substance into the atmosphere in Florida that seeks to “alter weather, temperature, climate, or sunlight intensity.”

Aircraft about to reinvent flight ― American Airlines unveils historic project

by Laila A.
July 22, 2025

American Airlines has just unveiled an exciting new project set to reinvent flights, and it begins with their initial deal of purchasing 100 hydrogen-electric engines from startup ZeroAvia. American Airlines is set to reimagine air travel by reworking the airline industry’s ideas of emissions and fuel choice. Perhaps aviation will no longer be classified by jet fuel, but by a cleaner fuel source. The partnership between American Airlines and ZeroAvia may signify the start of hydrogen-powered flights.

Texas Highways Have a New Nighttime Creature: Autonomous Trucks

Autonomous trucks are now driving highways at night, hauling food and dairy between Dallas and Houston . . . .

Aurora Innovation, the startup behind the trucks on the Dallas-Houston route, said Wednesday it had reached a new milestone with its Lidar system . . . . Aurora said its system is now able, in the dark, to detect objects further than the length of three football fields, enabling the vehicle to identify pedestrians, other vehicles or debris on the road about 11 seconds sooner than a human driver.

Not far away, driverless trucks from another company, Kodiak Robotics, are now operating around the clock in parts of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, delivering loads of sand for use in fracking. These five trucks—which operate on leased roads, not highways–don’t have a human on board.

Aurora’s trucks do have a human behind the wheel, just in case. So do autonomous Kodiak trucks operating on highways from Dallas to Atlanta, Houston and Oklahoma City—some of which drive at night . . . .

a push for daylighting intersections —

Advocates push universal daylighting bill to ban parking at NYC street corners, but opponents say plan ‘won’t improve’ traffic safety

By Barbara Russo-Lennon
Posted on November 12, 2025

Daylighting is the process of repurposing city curb space closest to an intersection to improve visibility for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Currently, most intersections in NYC allow parking up to the crosswalk, which advocates say decreases visibility for everyone on the road.

California's statewide daylighting law went into effect January 1st of this year: "As of Jan. 1, 2025, vehicle parking is not allowed within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk. This rule applies whether or not there is a red curb or no parking signage at the intersection."

But I still see people violating it. There's an intersection near my apartment where people park right at the corner. Not only does it make it more unsafe for pedestrians, but even for drivers, particularly when it's a tall vehicle parked right on the corner blocking the view---and it makes it difficult for other drivers making a right turn without having to swing out far from the corner, having to go into oncoming traffic.

nys has had daylighting parking rules, but the city hasn’t abided for some reason.
