He probably thinks he'd run it the way Sim campaigned on, not the way Sim is actually doing the job.

That said I'm pretty skeptical of a mayor alone without a party behind them. Kennedy Stewart was a total fiasco.

Absolutely.

I don't think he'll get a ton of traction unless all the ex-ABC moderates who are displeased with Sim are steadfast about not running for mayor themselves and there's a general push for an outsider to step in.

Boyle and Swanson were not the same. Neither will Maloney and orr.

Well would you look at that. The proof is in the pudding so far.

On the bright side, he'll be in office for three years less than Swanson.

He's far more likely to still be in office after 2026 than any of the ABC councillors, given the faceplant that party did in the recent byelection.

If Swanson's anything to go by, all the left-wing urbanists will abandon Orr after the third or fourth No vote.

Swanson was as old as Methuselah. Orr is much more in tune with young left-wing voters. Ones that are smart enough to see that approving highrise condos willynilly hasn't improved affordability for them one bit.

Also smart enough to see that rejecting every highrise hasn't improved affordability for them one bit.

JT was "in tune" with young left-wing voters - that didn't help him either. Doesn't help that voter turnout trends toward seniors.

He didn't vote against high-rise condos, he voted against rental units, including a modest proportion that will rent below market.

Isn't it a whopping 10% at market rates (not even below-market rates).

...The units will be built across the three towers. Ten per cent of them will be secured at city-wide average rental market rates and the other 90 per cent listed at prices of the developer's choosing...

So Westbank, known for catering to the offshore market, gets to set rates of their choosing on the vast majority of units. How dare Sean Orr oppose that!?

Argue with the posters criticizing Councillor Orr for voting against the proposal. I offered no opinion.

I disagree that Westbank 'cater to the offshore market' for their rental projects. They rent them at market rates to anyone wanting to rent a unit, just the same as every other developer of market rental housing. If the Broadway corridor projects get developed there will be plenty of competition. 10% of the units will rent below those market rents. They will rent at city-wide average rental market rates - that's the average rental rate for all units, whenever they were built, so almost certainly less than for new units which would be expected to command a premium. There's also a childcare centre to be given to the City.

Ah yes, who could forget the insidious offshore rental market! Maybe they have agents in Hong Kong advertising rentals there before advertising them here, what do you think?

Its a dedicated rental building though? How do these offshore investors take advantage and park their money, on ... let me check again... rentals?

Some excellent municipal reporting from Justin McElroy. Looks like there is a stealth attempt to rebrand Ken Sim after ABC's byelection shellacking. They've actually got him wearing collared shirts when he shows up for council meetings!

Not good news for Ken Sim & Co. No wonder we saw a 0% tax increase promise already.

Vancouver voters frustrated ahead of next civic election: poll
By Sonia Aslam
Posted October 21, 2025 7:50 am.

Less than a year from the next municipal elections in B.C., Vancouver voters appear to be ready for a change.

New polling by Canada Pulse Insights for CityNews found affordability tops the list for the most important issue facing the city of Vancouver. Home ownership, homelessness, the opioid crisis, health care, crime, and traffic congestion also make the cut...

...When Vancouverites were asked if they think the city is headed in the right direction, only 35 per cent of people agreed. Sixty-five per cent felt it was on the ‘wrong track,’ while 73 per cent of people agreed Mayor Ken Sim and council are out of touch with what residents want and need...

... Sixty-nine per cent of Vancouver residents, according to the poll, feel it’s “time for a change” and that Sim shouldn’t be re-elected. Sixty-four per cent of people think council members should be voted out as well.

Fifty-eight per cent felt Sim is doing a ‘bad job,’ while 55 per cent felt city council is doing a ‘bad job.’...

I guess the good news for Sim is that politicians that look like they're done for have been re-elected many times with similar unfavourability numbers, and ABC have got another year to shift the narrative.

Side note: should we rename this thread or create a Civic Election 2026 thread (assuming one doesn't already exist)?

In the modern age people have unrealistic timeline expectations.
Everyone expects things to magically appear instantly like an Amazon package.

Will he, won't he...
Personally I feel not having a mayoralty candidate at the top of the ticket has always hurt the Greens.

Vancouver city councillor considering mayoral run
By Srushti Gangdev and Charles Brockman
Posted October 22, 2025 11:55 am.

Just under a year away from the next municipal vote, another Vancouver city councillor is teasing a possible run for mayor.

Vancouver Green Party Coun. Pete Fry isn’t revealing just yet whether he’ll actually take the plunge, but his party has filled out all the paperwork needed to make that happen....

The new civic Liberal party (Ken Sim's former chief of staff) is proposing merging the UEL into the City of Vancouver:

Ken Sim and ABC's "zero means zero" budget appears to have got people riled up, I've seen that 645 people have registered to speak about it at council.
