These population statistics for urban agglomerations are quite flattering (except for Toronto's, which was lower than I expected...probably due to the separation of Oshawa and Hamilton urban areas):
Imagine if we used the criteria the US uses for CSA (Combined Statistical Areas) We'd see some larger numbers out of the big three metros. Toronto would likely be pushing 9 Million.

2024 population estimates for municipalities and CMAs were released by Stats Can in January IIRC so hopefully the 2025 estimates will be released in January 2026

lol, yeah, it's a nightmare for sure. AI sometimes helps if you tell it what you're looking for, but even AI has a hard time figuring out statscan's site
I used to work for Statcan about a decade ago, and I voiced my concerns about their crappy search function. Guess they got right on that.

I've always been a bit of a demographics nerd, and I am old enough to remember when Toronto and Montreal were roughly equal in size..At that time Vancouver was 1.5 million, and now seeing Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa surpassing what Vancouver was, makes me realize how nothing changes. The hierarchy is the hierarchy. Something tells me that even if Vancouver were to saay explode, surpassing Montreal, and Montreal were to stagnate, the hierarchy would still be the same..On another similar note, Australia has now surpassed 27 million people..I also remember when Canada was roughly the same size..Maybe a tad smaller. (26 million). this would have been the days when Guy Lafleur was coming off the bench, after smoking a cigarette!

Wow your old. I was Diefenbaker PM, Pop was 17,113,389, AB pop was 1,206,000 and Edmonton's Pop was 252,131.
When I entered the work force Edmonton's pop was still under half a million.

My memory only goes as far back to one of Pierre's reigns..I kinda sorta remember the Vietnam war going on and subsequently ending, and I have a very vague recollection of the moon landing..I was 3, and there was a big deal on T.V surrounding it, and that's all I can remember! The news and world events were for grown ups..Howard Cosell was around too..He should have hosted all of those lame Canadian game shows like "Beat the Clock", instead of calling sporting events!

The first world event I have any recollection of was the JFK assassination in 1963. I was six years old. I remember Churchill's funeral in 1965. It was only about 1967 before i started remembering more world events.
I just double checked. The population of Canada in 1957 when I was born was only 16.6M. Canada now has 2.5x the population it did when I was born.
