Costco building 2 stores in 2 years here is a clear message Winnipeg is on the up and up despite the progress not being as quick as we’d all like.

Me? Calls on Winnipeg.

Sadly the conversations David Asper has with Maison Simons around 2010 have likely permanently poisoned them on ever opening here. As they are privately owned and self fund their expansion it will be very difficult to get them to change their opinion.

When The Elms failed at the proposal stage Simons had indicated they would only open locally in the Polo Park area. Since then both Sears and Hudsons Bay have left the mall and CF Polo Park has accommodated several other larger spaces including facilitating the relocation of Zellers/Target to what was to be The Elms site. While there was been no further public statements from Simons on Winnipeg that they have repeatedly had opportunities to open in Winnipeg and CF likely had those discussions behind the scenes the lack of any movement and the lack of space being held for them speaks fairly strongly of the intent. For a time it felt like what is now Zara and some of the second floor space that was Sears may have been being held back for Simons but that too has long passed.

Considering the West Winnipeg location took 5+ years to get to this point I am not sure the West St Paul location is going to be opening next year. Heck, the construction stage of the actual West Winnipeg store took almost 12 months and there is no signs that West St Paul is at that stage yet. Has it even been confirmed that West St Paul council has approved the zoning for the site?

I think the West St Paul store will definitely start next year but it would seem unlikely to open in 2026. They built the Westport Festival location in blazing time, but I don't think start to finish construction - site development and structure that size is feasible in under 12 months.

Considering the utilities work for West Winnipeg Costco does back many years, I want to say five or more, there was a lot done before "construction started". I recall there was a discussion, likely here, how the sewer pipes put in the ground for the site may have been too small. That lead to Shindico (site owner) and Costco having a standoff with talk for a while the whole project was "cancelled".

One could say the planning has taken millennia if we go back far enough. Eternity maybe? haha If we count from when they actually start on the store, it goes pretty quick.

Ardene is now open at Polo Park. Fairly large foot print. Took over the space of Anthropologie and I'm pretty sure the unit that was right next to it.

The Bay space will be a new Nike Flagship store, think WEM, Toronto, Montreal sized, and Uniqlo. No idea when either will be announced but its happening.

I guess that means my idea of an ice skating rink there isn't going to happen.

So, let me get this right....If you meant Polo.. 212,000 ft2 , Nike Flagship store, Toronto, Montreal sized, and Uniqlo..... 212,000 ft2 ,over three floors will get filled by those 2 stores?
I kind of imagine barely 1/3 to 1/2 would be taken at best.
