North Vancouver council gives final OK to what will be the North Shore's tallest tower

The tallest tower on the North Shore is about to be built.

On Monday, District of North Vancouver council gave final approval to a large mixed-use project at 1634 and 1748 Capilano Road.

Once completed, there will be a 37-storey tower – stepping down to a wider, 11-storey wing – with 430 market rental units and 48 below-market units. That includes a $16-million partnership with YWCA to deliver 18 family-oriented, subsidized rental suites. At ground level, there will be several units for commercial use.

The project will also erect a second building with 171 hotel units over 12 storeys. The two structures will be separated by a newly built road.

Currently on the site are Best Western and Econo Lodge motels.

I wish Vancouver was such a big city that we built a bridge to Gibsons and make Sunshine Coast a part of the Metro area. Imagine these condos getting built up there

A bridge was being looked at by the provincial Liberals... but then the NDP came along and (along with the Peachland bypass, the George Massey Bridge, and any look into a second crossing in Kelowna) completely threw it in the garbage!

Even the "cheapest" options at Langdale would've been $2+ billion... to save a few hours for a few thousand people who like how hard it is to get there.

The Libs themselves knew it was a bad idea, but hey, they managed to find an excuse to spend the transportation budget on highways instead of SkyTrains, so it's a win! Glad they're not in charge anymore.

If you're throwing down 5 Billion for a dead end road for 50k people, you might as well just pipe in some fresh water from the Capilano watershed while you're at it. Everyone get's a special assessment of $200k+ to pay for it all (assuming there's roughly half as many properties as people), I'm sure that'd go well.

The current government also has a few non skytrain highway projects on the go right now. Also, it's a big province. Not everyone lives in Metro Vancouver

Of course. When a premier and her cabinet goes out of their way, however, to avoid funding the SkyTrains in favour of bridges to nowhere (largely to "punish" the metro for voting her out of her own riding)? They've gotta go.

Not everybody, but almost everybody. It also doesn't generate all of the government revenue, but almost all of it.

FWIW the province announced funding for two reservoirs and a treatment plant upgrade.

Looks great, the water is always super clean and clear there. Plus seals are not uncommon!

So cool! With no beaches in the City of North Van, this will definitely be a welcome amenity and ease the pressure on Ambleside.

It also makes the Lower Lonsdale area even more of a destination than it already is, with the Quay and Shipyards and breweries.

How clean is the inlet compared to False Creek? Genuine question.

Yes, I'm quite intrigued by the City's proposal. IMHO they're doing a nice job with Lonsdale - aside from the parking - which is effectively the North Shore's "downtown".

On a related waterfront note, I was on the SeaWalk the other day for the first time in a while, and the controversial concrete wall is in place now. Ugly, ugly, ugly.

I assume it's a lot cleaner with more water movement compared to False Creek. Who knows how much of a concern there is with any non-E.coli polllution.
