A looong time ago there was a 'please allow passengers to leave the train' announcement on the train at every stop. I've asked transit a few times to bring it back due to people trying to enter the train from the platform at the same time as people are trying to leave the train.

I'll admit that now it's less bad than it used to be but still... All I can do is try to lead by example.

I am shocked at the number of people who blithely stand right in front of the doors. At waterfront station Canada Line it's abysmal. You can't even blame tourists because I notice it year round, not just in the summer.

I've 'accidentally' elbowed people a few times.

I had a number of times where I stepped off the train and just stopped as there were people right in front of me (trying to enter the train). They looked very confused and had to move to the side so I could move out of their way. I haven't had to do that recently.

Had someone on the bus get upsetty spaghetti when I brushed past them so I could move to the back. Maybe if he wasn't looking around like it was the VAG then I wouldn't have made contact. I swear we need a second TransLink for people who know how to act on transit.

The thing is that the smart people stand right next to the train beside the door so that after the folks exiting the train have passed they can easily slip in behind them.

Automated messaging telling people to take their fkackcta backpacks off would be number one on my list.

That and "don't even think about bringing your bike on during rush hour". Isn't that supposed to be verboten?

Agreed, and I am sure that some platform signage requesting removal of the fxxfxx backpacks would induce the habit of doing so.

>>Trouble is, there seems to be nowhere on the trains to hang or arrange bicycles in transit. / Maybe check out how cities in Europe handle that.
Bikes are big over there and transit is well-developed.

They can hold their bikes vertically to take up less footprint

The same as for elevators, except for elevators, you stand on the side away from the exit path so you direct them to the exit. Nothing worse that having puzzled people step off an elevator slowing things down by not knowing which way to turn to exit or having people in their path.

It’s also a Translink rule that you can’t use a speaker. Your device must be silent if you don’t have headphones. I tell people this regularly now because the more we vocalize our frustration and stop acting like overly tolerant Canadians, the more people will stop doing this. With backpacks as well, we all need to say something in order to to effect change. Each bus has a list of rules at the front and you can point this out to them if they argue.

Like those people who get off an escalator and stop at the top and look around like they just entered Narnia

Doorway effect.

Quote:
The doorway effect or location updating effect is a replicable psychological phenomenon characterized by short-term memory loss when passing through a doorway or moving from one location to another. People tend to forget items of recent significance immediately after crossing a boundary and often forget what they were thinking about or planning on doing upon entering a different room. Research suggests that this phenomenon occurs both at literal boundaries (e.g., moving from one room to another via a door) and metaphorical boundaries (e.g., imagining traversing a doorway, or even when moving from one desktop window to another on a computer).

Memory is organized around specific events or episodes, such as attending a lecture or having a family meal, rather than being a continuous stream interrupted by sleep. This organization is called episodic memory, which involves receiving and storing information about events that are temporarily dated, along with their time and place relationships.

Numerous psychological studies have indicated that the external context, including the location where events occur, plays a significant role in how memories are separated. This context helps establish distinctions between different remembered events. Memories of events that happen in the environment we're currently in are easier to access compared to those from different places. As a result, when we experience spatial changes and move to a different location, it can act as a boundary marker that separates and categorizes our continuous flow of memories into distinct segments...

So question is... now that 3 years have passed, what does "in the coming years" mean? Hopefully they are at least thinking of this when it comes to the systems they're adding on the M-Line extension.

If they're listening to music, just start singing along badly or find out what the song is and play it with a delay on your speaker

If they're talking to someone, join in and make it weird

If they're watching something, make comments about it

I would also like to point out that the people I usually see blasting sound from their sound blasting devices tend to be, or at least appear to be, of a lower socioeconomic status and are most likely looking for a fight
