Friends of Hamelin say the allegations don’t match the person they once knew, and many are struggling to understand what led up to the attacks.

“She was never a violent type of person,” said friend Amory Pasap. “She is a kind and caring person who would help her friends when they are in need.”

But Roy McKay, who has known Hamelin for 15 years, said things changed in the woman’s life after she moved from Surrey to the Downtown Eastside in 2019.

“Everything went downhill,” McKay said, adding that Hamelin started spending time with people involved in illicit drug use. “I believe the environment changed her.”

Shane Lightbown, a former coworker of Hamelin’s at Groundwork Construction Cleaning, said that in recent months he had grown concerned about Hamelin.

Carney says tougher bail, sentencing rules to be introduced next week

The federal government will introduce new legislation around bail reform aimed at keeping violent criminals and repeat offenders off the street.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says the Minister of Justice will be tabling legislation next week that will focus on new reverse-onus bail provisions for violent and organized crime-related offences.

Carney says under the reverse-onus provision, it will no longer be up to the Crown to prove why someone should stay behind bars, it will be up to the accused to prove to the court why they can be trusted to be released.

“Right now, in most bail hearings, the starting point is to release, and the Crown must prove why someone should not be released on bail, making it too easy for repeat violent offenders to quickly get back on the street,” said Carney during an announcement in Etobicoke on Thursday. “We’re making bail stricter to keep you safer.”

He said his government intends to “toughen sentences for repeat offenders of auto theft, of organized crime, and of home invasion, so that criminals who have repeatedly victimized your community do not have the chance to do so again.”

The bill will allow for consecutive sentences for violent and repeat offenders, so that multiple sentences can’t be served at the same time. Carney said that means an offender with a seven-year sentence and a five-year sentence must serve a total of 12 years, not seven.

The Liberals also plan to introduce more punitive sentences for organized retail theft and eliminate conditional sentences for sexual assault.

You've made comments in the past along the lines of "let Darwin take care of the addicts", so I wonder what your motive was for creating this thread and posting in here... a lot.

It's a similar narrative to your Chinese money launderer, Chinese investor, bridge and tunnel crowd comments.

Do I hate this woman, like you do? No I do not. It appears this is her first offence, and drug addiction has ruined her life. I hope this woman can get her life back on track.

I'm sure you'd feel the same if it was your mom, spouse or kid she stabbed. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

I would say that these repeat violent offenders should be held somewhere indefinitely. If you get albeit meaningless consequences for your actions and you still perform those actions, it's clear that you can't be rehabilitated.

When first seeing her caprured on CCTV camera, I though to myself, she don't seem to be that far off gone.
After reading the statement from pass coworkers and friends, I'm hopeful and have some confidence that with good help, she will correct her path in life.

Brutal and scary especially when they have no idea why they're attacking. The attackers definitely need a meaningful sentence not a slap on the wrist.

I'd say anyone stuck at the mental age of whatever the mental age is of people who do wrong to others but don't understand that it is wrong shouldn't be allowed free agency. They can't take care of themselves.

Most likely reason even though there's no current connection.

“That flight school and his ownership of it has been the subject of some litigation that’s been going on,” Robertson said.

There’s no indication the legal dispute has any connection to the attack.

The Canadian Flight Centre’s petition to B.C. Supreme Court seeks an order for Saifeddin Rajab Falah Aldara’in to remove himself and his belongings from the dorms, as well as a permanent ban of his re-entry to the premises.

It also seeks payment for the time he spent there beyond July 2, 2021 — the date he withdrew from his classes.

How is this man allowed to stay there while not a student and not even paying rent? If he’s no longer a student, how is he allowed to even stay in the country on a study permit? Why do they need the courts to decide something that is obviously bonkers?
