A few more O-Train changes in August for extension, wheel work
3 more partial Line 1 closures, 1 more week of less Line 2 service

CBC News
Posted: Aug 06, 2025 10:31 AM EDT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

Partial closures and schedule changes continue this month for Ottawa's rail transit system.

OC Transpo said Tuesday that Line 1 service will be scaled back Saturday Aug. 16, Sunday Aug. 17 and Sunday Aug. 31 for more work on the extension east from Blair to Trim stations and on the St-Laurent station tunnel.

On Aug. 16 and 17, trains won't run east of Tremblay station. R1 buses will connect Hurdman station and Blair, with the usual shuttle between St-Laurent and Cyrville stations.

R1 buses will run instead of the east-west rain line the morning of Aug. 31. Trains should come back at noon.

This eastern connection work includes cameras, security systems and software and allows more driver training through the 12.5 kilometres of new track and five stations, according to OC Transpo. There should be more changes in September.

The transit service's website says the east extension should open this year. The target for its western extension to Moodie Drive and Algonquin College is 2027.

The north-south Line 2 will run every 24 minutes instead of every 12 minutes after 8 p.m. from Aug. 11 to 15.

This will let OC Transpo install equipment to monitor the axle bearings on its trains. Problems with those bearings, part of what hold the wheels to the train, have plagued Line 1.

Line 4 to and from the airport won't be affected.

Line 1 LRT loses power, malfunctions in pair of weekend incidents
Service was already reduced for scheduled work

CBC News
Posted: Aug 17, 2025 2:23 PM EDT | Last Updated: 4 hours ago

Technical problems caused the O-Train Line 1 to stop operating twice over the past three days, according to the city's acting general manager of transit services.

At around 6:30 p.m. Friday, a power outage halted the east-west LRT line between Tunney's Pasture and Rideau stations, according to a memo from Troy Charter to Ottawa city council.

Replacement R1 buses ran until the train came back online, Charter said.

Then on Sunday morning, Line 1 didn't launch between Tunney's Pasture and Tremblay stations due to a "malfunction with the switch mechanism at the crossover near uOttawa station," Charter wrote in a followup memo.

Once again, replacement buses were called into service. The line was running again between Tunney's Pasture and Tremblay by around 12:45 p.m., Charter said.

Line 1 service was already being scaled back this weekend as part of scheduled work on the line's eastern extension from Blair to Trim stations, as well as work on the St-Laurent station tunnel.

The power disruption and the switch mechanism malfunction were not related, Charter said. Nor were either related to the eastern extension work, he added.

Due to the scheduled work, replacement buses continue to run Sunday between Hurdman and Blair stations. Full service is expected to resume across the entirety of Line 1 on Monday morning.

Line 1 to close this weekend for scheduled maintenance
Noise levels could rise for 'short periods' during LRT work, OC Transpo warns

CBC News
Posted: Oct 03, 2025 1:28 PM EDT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

Line 1 of the O-Train will be closed this Saturday and Sunday for scheduled maintenance work, says OC Transpo.

The closure was announced back in August as part of the maintenance plan to replace rails, upgrade cables and perform rail grinding, among other work.

The R1 replacement bus will run between Tunney's Pasture and Blair stations. A shuttle bus will run between Cyrville and St-Laurent stations.

Service on Line 1 will resume Monday morning as normal.

An alert on OC Transpo's website in September noted that people who live near Line 1 could hear noise levels rise "for short periods of time" while this work is underway, but any disruptions should end by Oct. 6.

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to make my way downtown tomorrow for... no particular reason. My play these days though is to walk to SK and then take line 2. Hurdman station makes my eye twitch. Particularly trying to come home on the 90.

I'd rather walk from SK after taking Line 2.

I feel like they cleaned some of the aerial elements recently but SSeguins somewhat recent video lamenting the sheer amount of cobwebs and water run off stains hit very close to home.

Work is stating on the Blair Station elevator replacement, Gloucester Centre side. They'll build a new one on the east side of the tower, and then replace the legacy elevator on the west side.

It puzzles me that Gloucester Centre is not directly connected to the station. They built a bridge to nowhere at Bayview, so building a short bridge here seems like a no-brainer and doing it at the same time as these elevators would make so much sense.

From what I can tell based on the current set-up and GeoOttawa, the station tower's ground level had a door through the retail space and transit riders would get out and cross under the cannopy to a Gloucester Centre entrance that no longer exists (replaced with the Mongolia Village, which itself is now gone). That entrance to the retail space has been sealed off, and the canopy was taken down last week.

It does seem that the tower that was approved in 2020 would have replaced that vertical circulation tower and created a direct link to the second level of the mall, but I assume that tower won't be built anytime soon if OC is finally moving on the elevator project.

If a private entity is willing to also put up the capital to build another bridge like the one at Bayview, then by all means.

It puzzles me more that it continues to exist, at least in its current form.

The Gloucester Centre? The place is surprisingly useful with mostly 15 minute neighbourhood essentials, a good restaurant in the Big Rig and a well used food court. All that's missing is pleasant pedestrian/cycling infra and on-site residential (which apparently isn't economically viable for them since they didn't even build the one approved tower).

It all used to be much better used.

The more density and residents in the area, the more useful it becomes. Surprised we haven't seen any movements on the other proposed towers nearby OR the one that was supposed to be attached to the mall.

I'm surprised RioCan never built its third Frontier tower, at the very least, bust mostly disappointed the one at the station wasn't built.

Maybe the retirement residence on the corner of Blair and Ogilvie has a better shot.

I occasionally travel Moodie to Blair these days. I was wondering if anybody has seen an estimate of how long this trip would be post Stage II West?

It's supposed to be 20 minutes Moodie to Parliament and I guess it's about the same from there to Blair so 40 minutes once you board a train seems reasonable. Of course how much time it takes to your actual destination is another question. It's extremely slow right now on the western transitway because of the construction I guess it wouldn't have been much more than 45 minutes under the old system?

I would have thought closer to 50 mins. A 40 min ride with 15 mins on each end (including transfers) would actually be quite bearable for me. Better than a 45 min drive which requires my constant attention. And better than the 1:40h minimum scheduled trip I have now. Of course if the bus schedule is designed such that a bus on this end means a 15 min wait on the other, that makes the trip 1:25h. So it'll be interesting to see how execution of the bus schedule changes. With my luck they'll finish the line to Moodie just in time for me to get posted out.

No LRT from Blair to Tremblay this morning due to "a ventilation issue". OC Transpo isn't saying much about what that means but it must be a significant issue.

O-Train Line 1 - Blair to Tunney's Pasture (Westbound Trip in Fall 2025)

• Video Link

In this video, we take a ride on-board O-Train Line 1, from Blair Station in the East, to Tunney's Pasture in the West. Traveling a length of 12.5km through 13 stations, and passing through a tunnel underneath the downtown core business district, this is the full experience of riding the Confederation Line in Ottawa.

After Monday's Westbound trip, it is now time to head back East. Catch us on the return trip as we ride O-Train Line 1 to Blair Station.
