Fire update
We have just been advised Fire 113 jumped the Churchill River and has entered the Town through the Industrial Area. All we know is it has gone further south than the South Indian Lake road at PR391. All personnel including fire fighters have had to evacuate the community. Further information may not be available before morning due to thick smoke and firefighters not being able to return to Town for some time.
Hope for the best, and if nothing else be thankful everyone got out safely.
We will provide updates as soon as we have further information to share.
There are no words.

Thankfully, 90% of the people moved out of Leaf Rapids, when the mine closed in 2002.

Yeah, doesn't look good. You call up the timeline off that site and you can see how quickly it moved from the northwest, over the river and into town.

This is just yesterday.

Why do I constantly get signed out on this site?

And it happens really quickly. Does this happen to everyone else? If it does, why? So 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 annoying.

I was even signed out in the middle of making this post.

This is on mobile. I haven't used PC in months as im off work for the summer.

Ill post at the thread provided.

This from today's CBC Manitoba website:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/carbon-capture-deep-sky-manitoba-9.6933590

On the one hand it's encouraging to see investment coming into the province, and apparently without provincial capital going into it.

On the other hand carbon capture seems like an unproven technology, and risks being "greenwashing" for an industry that seems delighted to continue to destroy the environment if it can just squeeze out a few more years of massive profits.

It it good for the province and the environment, or is it going to be a white elephant? I'm on the fence for this one, and would like to read what folks think.

Is this company looking at capturing the carbon and then using/selling it for other uses? If so then it's a cool industrial concept and hopefully that can lead to more related tech investments. If not then it's pure greenwashing.

At max capacity it'll have an annual capacity of removing ~1.3 million barrels of oil worth of from the atmosphere, when Alberta alone produces about 4.2 million barrels daily (numbers from August 2025). So roughly a third of Alberta's daily production over the course of a year.

The other question is how power intensive is this tech? Hydro is at it's wits end for capacity so I hope this isn't a huge energy sink.

I'm cautious about this. I like the idea behind it, but also I'm concerned of the "what else" involved with this, on top of the what ifs.

I think Hydro retained a little capacity by not renewing their contract with Minnestoa, didn't they? However, they probably want to use it for the proposed Hydro-Fibre link with Nunavut. Link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaxOh8MDffU

If it's a choice between carbon capture and extending hydro to Nunavut, I'd pick the latter every time.

Re the deep Sky project.

Something I want folks disparaging the concept to bear in mind is that every climate researcher will tell you that we have to get rid of the accumulated carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; that even if you could wave some magic wand and switch over the entire planet's economic activity so that it was carbon neutral, we would still be stuck with the ongoing impacts of the pollutants that have been injected into the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution. You'll see the expression 'baked in' thrown around a lot, meaning that if you could magically stop all emissions, you'd still be looking at baked in atmospheric warming for another century or more.
If we want to stabilize and even get back to the climate that we were used to seeing earlier, we have a LOT of work to do in pulling those pollutants out of the atmosphere, and that's where DAC (Direct Air Capture) comes in as part of the solution.
