^ Absolutely! Although I'd definitely consider the Spring Garden area to be part of downtown as far as South Park.

Calgary has the Rundle Ruins, basically the recreated leftovers from the first real hospital in the city. Kinda neat, but still kinda fake.

Kitsch typically refers to low quality vulgarity designed to appeal to low brow tastes. There's nothing kitschy about a stone wall if properly executed. That wall looks passable as an original wall from a church that's been restored. The issue is that it's next to a soul less subdivision filled with cookie cutter McHouses. Cheap windows, vinyl siding, but then stone columns out front to give the illusion of quality and refinement? Doubt it's even real stone. Probably a one inch thick tile. It's the houses that are kitschy 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵. That highway/stroad doesn't help either.

This one is mesmerizing, with the rocky outcrops lower on the mountain almost looking like prehistoric monsters oozing down the hill to devour the city..

Kelowna is a great example of why it makes a lot of sense to build high rises in places surrounded by incredible scenery. Imagine living in one of those high rises... the view would never get old.

I wish more smaller cities would follow Kelowna's lead, especially the ones surrounded by pleasant scenery.

I actually don't mind the houses, there's some arts & crafts / craftsman style going on in there, along with the typical suburban banality. It's just the fake ruins look that makes no sense to me, some marketing person had way too much influence on the area and now there are the walls that are supposed to evoke some "legacy" that has never existed here. The wall is nice on it's own, but it has nothing to do with the area it's in and just looks tacky.

Do you know the story behind this? Like, what's the point of creating fake ruins as decoration for a traffic circle?

I think it's pure marketing. Lots of new communities have themes, think it's just a marketing thing to get people's attention. This one always makes me laugh, supposed to be Irish inspired, but it's a typical suburb, despite the stone tower lol
