I hope they do something about obscuring that pipe. Weren't they going to place a bridge over it or something? Would be lame if they left it like that...

IIRC, it was planned to complete about the same time as the Waterline, which makes sense given how closely they interact with each other. In essence, the answer is basically "sometime near the end of the year"

Does anyone know if/when water will start to flow from Waterloo Park to Town Lake? That was the plan and hopefully it will happen.

https://www.austintexas.gov/department/waller-creek-district-and-tunnel

....Except during cleanings, the tunnel is almost always full of water. To maintain water quality, fresh water is drawn in from the lake. This provides a system to maintain a constant flow of water in the creek during dry periods.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but does this mean that it worked? Because it wasn't gushing like Shoal Creek?

Yeah Max I think think it worked. Maybe someone in engineering can chime in?

I was hoping it would be more of a controlled flow at least a foot deep not dependent on rainfall. It would have also been nice if the boardwalk hugged one side of the creek bank instead of directly in the center. This whole 15ish year project is meh.

I was under that impression as well. Perhaps they'll eventually change that? I always remember this being sold as something very very similar to the river walk...but so far it just looks kinda meh indeed.

You are right it was sold as something similar to the river walk...maybe an extension of 6th street. More bars and places to eat.

That's how it was supposed to be according to this 2017 article from the Austin American Statesman.

Downtown’s Waller Creek oasis begins with Waterloo Park improvements

Quote:
The tunnel, which is not yet complete but operating under interim conditions, will also suck water up from Lady Bird Lake to keep the creek flowing even in times of drought.

It is still an improvement over the old Waller Creek…

I think it's too soon to say how it will ultimately be. They are barely getting the creek ecology in. I expect there will be more activity in the area where it goes through 6th Street. I am glad it isn't like the Riverwalk as I'd rather not copy something so close by. We also need to see how the convention center ties into it not to mention Palm Park. Give it some more time and I think it will be a great improvement through that area of downtown.

Commenting on the appearance and comparisons to the Riverwalk that I missed from a while back, like Jdawgboy, I'm glad that it's not a copy/paste of the Riverwalk, or even an Austin version of it. I read the original description and renderings as a more natural area, which it seems as though it is becoming with more vegetation added frequently. As things grow in, it will be a bit of an oasis slicing through downtown. I welcome that, if it indeed turns out to be that.

That said, I do recall one area on the northern portion of it being a bit more active, but I don't have time to look it up.

As long as it's not littered with trash and unhoused ppl, it's a win.
