WTF!?!? I know this is a government project, and, will not be complete until 2032. but still. Why erect the bottom half of the crane and then stop? What's the point of that???

Wonder if they discovered something wrong with the crane or the crane base.

I remember the crane that was at the project on Wagoneers Lane in Fredericton. They put the crane up for the second building, and then a week or two later (IIRC) they had to take it back down because something was wrong. Was a rather puzzling time.

A building permit for $112.1M has just been issued by the city for phase 2 of this project.

Reinforced structural support columns for the main floor are now being constructed and are visible as you drive by on Wheeler Blvd.

Will this project have a "science centre" component open to the public?

That's what I assumed this place was, but I guess it's more of a research centre with offices for government agencies etc?

It is primarily a multi-agency government research facility, but, there is a large lobby where they will have a whale skeleton suspended from the rafters, and presumably a small exhibit space of some kind. There will also be a lecture hall on the ground level as well, so, there may be some educational events available to the general public too. This is partially speculative, but, the lobby will at least be open to the public.

It looks like all of this will be in the second phase. First phase which is currently being built seems to only have research labs and offices throughout the building.

The article states that the tower crane will soon be installed. Actual construction of the new north wing of the facility won't begin until spring on next year.

The ceremonial groundbreaking was today.

The ultimate price tag includes all the scientific research equipment that the centre will be festooned with. $325M in construction contracts have already been issued.

The spending. How on earth was this not a scandal? I realize this is likely the wrong crowd - but this project smells fishy. Or should I say porky.

Let me guess.
- Brand new asphalt resurfacing with proper base layer with new access road from Church st.
- Brand new perimeter fencing with barbwire, electronic surveillance, 8 dobermanns dogs specifically trained for ASEC, and the most sophisticated access gate known to man.
- New golden driveway from staging area to construction zone with 4 trailers along the way in case someone needs to go to the washroom, have a break, and rest.
- 20ft levee flood wall along Halls Creek to prevent the possibility of a major flood to the staging area.

And it wouldn't surprise me to see a magical dome covering the whole staging area in case of rain.
