ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - An elderly man from Alabama was killed after he was hit by a car in Downtown Atlanta this past weekend, according to police.
This marks the second pedestrian death within a two-block radius in the last three months.
“This should not be happening on Peachtree Street. It’s the main street of Atlanta,” said John Fischer, president of Atlanta Downtown Neighborhood Association.
According to police, Crabtree was walking through the crosswalk at Peachtree Street NW and Baker Street NW when he was hit by an unidentified black sedan.
Both deaths occurred in an area previously a part of a project to improve pedestrian safety. In 2021, the city launched Shared Streets project along Peachtree Street. The report found that this stretch of Peachtree Street (from Baker Street to Ellis Street) saw between eight to 17 times more crashes than the statewide average for minor arterials. In 2022, Mayor Andre Dickens’ administration ended the pilot project.
[Note - while listed as "pilot project," there was funding from ARC to implement a more permanent pedestrian safety project, and Mayor Dickens let the funding go unused after being pressured by republican donor Richard Bowers.]
