May 20, 2025

The University of Alberta Properties Trust (UAPT) is excited to welcome Mike Helm as our new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective May 22, 2025! A proud University of Alberta (UA) alumnus, Mike brings two decades of experience in the Canadian commercial real estate sector. His strong foundation in finance and investment strategy will bring a world of opportunity for the development and direction of UAPT’s future.

Holding a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from the University of Alberta, Mike has also earned both the AACI and CCIM designations that reflect his deep expertise and commitment to this industry. Throughout his career, he has also built trusted relationships across the Canadian real estate landscape. His added background in market intelligence, financial analysis, and portfolio strategy will be invaluable as we continue to grow while also stewarding the University’s land assets with passion, purpose and care.

Most recently, Mike led a national investment platform at Altus Group. He directly oversaw the performance for some of the country’s largest institutional real estate portfolios. This included guiding teams through dynamic market conditions while aligning business operations with a focus on long-term goals, delivering results with both clarity and confidence.

Mike is also no stranger to the UA landscape. In a previous role, he directly oversaw all aspects of the University’s real estate portfolio which played a key part in shaping land and asset management strategies while supporting several major initiatives at the same time.

Exciting opportunity for visionary architects and urban designers!

The University of Alberta Properties Trust is inviting qualified architectural teams to participate in a design competition for the creation of a Master Plan for a new Mixed Use (MU) site and signature Transit Hub on the West 240 land in Edmonton.

We’re envisioning a vibrant, integrated, and community-rooted urban destination defined by:

✨ Walkability
 Connection to nature
 Social vitality
️ A distinct architectural identity

The Transit Hub will serve as both a functional transit node and a signature symbol of the community’s character.

This is more than a planning exercise, it’s an opportunity to shape a specific vision, grounded in storytelling, precedent, and collaboration with stakeholders. The resulting Guiding Design Principles will influence the entire future of the community, including architectural controls.

A fun 'subway series' on Friday between the Bears and MacEwan.

Decent crowd, but this back to back should be standing room; there is a huge opportunity here.

The six-story buildings look like they came straight out of the 70s. They are among the worst bits of the development if they look anything like what is being shown.

Keep in mind that it was likely an early massing, land use and concept used to show what could happen, not so much architecturally, but in terms of density and built-form.

Do they know they can mix those separate uses? Like a way worse version of heritage valley, yikes.

Gawd awful design and exterior materials. Looks like something a trailer park mfg/developer has come up with but surely they could do better.
