It would be a huge loss. From personal experience we go to PSP frequently. Going to LAX would change our entire day of travel. For someone going to JFK, they would have to clear passport control with every international flight, adding potentially hours of time. The pre-clearance helps many tourist destinations in the US. It's not going anywhere.
