Hmm... let me think...

Remove all the seats and let everyone stand of course!
Maybe charge for bathroom
Replace ramp agents with robots and self-driving cars
Replace flight attendant with robots
In flight drink/snack/meal vending machine
Self-flying planes
Replace ground-staff with machines

I believe AC already have the technology for the last one with self check-in, self baggage-drops, facial recognition for boarding, etc...
I think the issue is Transport Canada requires them to have cabin attendants on the aircraft. That said, if you put in vending machines for the drinks, the cabin attendants could be used for productive things, with the advent of "award winning internet" maybe farm them out to Telus to do call center work.

Giving deserved kudos to Air Canada

Air Canada has been in the news lately, with passengers expressing frustration over slow processing times for refunds and reimbursements related to the recent labour disruption.

That said, I have to give credit where it’s due. I booked an extended weekend getaway in Business on a route served by a CRJ-900, but both the outbound and return flights were downgraded to a Q400. The return leg was this past Monday, and less than 24 hours later, I received an email from Air Canada notifying me of an automatic fare adjustment and refund due to the downgrade.

Despite the aircraft change, I still had access to the Maple Leaf Lounge in both cities, along with priority boarding and baggage service. While the situation wasn’t ideal, I appreciated the prompt and proactive response from Air Canada.

Indeed, the fifth freedom LHR-BOM flight has now been reduced to 4x weekly (LHR-BOM days x357, BOM-LHR days x146) to facilitate YOW-LHR. The first week of the winter schedule it's still daily as YOW-LHR winter service begins 02NOV, and two dates around the holidays where they are keeping the fifth freedom flight in place of YOW-LHR.

20 million will most likely happen in 2026.
The increases have trended up over the past few months.
After a sluggish first 3 months, the next three had strong growth. Will it continue to trend up? Time will tell. There will be more flights this winter season compared to last winter.
My guess is it won't hit 20 Million, but will be closer than people think and my guess here on record is 19,700,000

Jan 1.8%
February - 2.1%
March 1.5
April 4.0%
May 3.8%
June 6.7%
July 4.4%

U.S ambassador threatening to “take a look” at US preclearance, due to lower Canadian tourism to the US.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/us-ambassador-airport-pre-clearance-1.7644088

Personally, I think it’s just idle threats. No stations will close, although maybe opening new ones, like YTZ, might get delayed or canceled. Even there I have my doubts.

Maybe a reduction of staffing or changes to the hours of service might happen, but that’s about it. US preclearance is first and foremost a tool for the US to pre-screen foreigners on foreign soil. So getting rid of it at certain stations is counter to a lot of Trump’s immigration policies.

Nativism has been a recurrent feature of American political discourse since the Tammany Hall era of the 1840s. Why stop now???

Hoekstra is a fool who doesn't know what he is talking about. Pre-clearance isn't going anywhere. Forcing Canadians into customs stateside would massively overload US based facilities. The US uses pre-clearance for a reason. Canadians represent like 30% of international visits to the US.

The most I could see is them pulling it from a few smaller Canadian airports, but even then I would be surprised.

if Shannon airport in Ireland can support Pre-clearance, I'm sure the major Canadian airports can.

What Hoekstra saw was likely a report stating that US pre-clearance traffic was declining precipitously in Canadian airports and that the cost-per-passenger was increasing as a result to operate the facilities. The capital cost of shifting clearances back to domestic soil for Canadian trips (requiring large expansions of customs areas) and the likelyhood that the drop in traffic is transitory and unlikely to persist over the long term means the US would be unlikely to actually pull the service.

Exactly. It's a threat that affects them more than us. Frankly if less people travel to the US becuase of it, so be it. I couldn't care less.

The guy's an intellectual moron. Preclearance actually saves the Yanks money as Canada picks up part of the tab (i.e., capital costs in the terminals) and it's a lot cheaper on a volume basis. Without it, they'd have to hire a bunch more staff across the States in places like CMH that barely have any international service outside of transborder. Oh and buh bye to the Ambassador's YOW-DCA shuttle if preclearance goes.

How many people fly from Canada to LaGuardia or Reagan? Yeah, let's shunt all of that traffic over to JFK and Dulles, the many Americans who fly these routes will love that lol.

I only end up in Manhattan around once every one-two years. In principle LaGuardia is closer. My preference is JFK with the easy train service into Manhattan. Newark also has a train in Manhattan.

LaGuardia use to be one of the worst airports in the US. That changed with all the renovations, now its a nice airport, but still not easy to get to on public transit.

Reagan/Dulles I have no personal experience with.

It is probably a rounding error. The Canadian traffic into these airports is little regional jets or narrow bodies.

I am not sure preclearance is a particular advantage for Canadians. It forces passengers to go to the airport much earlier and arrive at shitty domestic terminals. Yeah, there are a handful of secondary airports without customs facilities that would be inaccessible, but I am not sure those flights are a big loss.

It would be a huge loss. From personal experience we go to PSP frequently. Going to LAX would change our entire day of travel. For someone going to JFK, they would have to clear passport control with every international flight, adding potentially hours of time. The pre-clearance helps many tourist destinations in the US. It's not going anywhere.

I think this is great! ANYTHING to make travel to the Fascist Republic less appealing is fine by me!
