Nice pics.

That gate 17 pic from YOW is interesting.

Looks like the airport is getting ready to add VDGS on some gates. You can clearly see 3 metal poles near the terminal, in front of the lead-in lines for gate 17, 17A and 17B. They will most likely be used for a visual docking guidance system.

Did a quick google search, and came up with this...

https://www.merx.com/ottawaairport/solic...Docking-Guidance-System-AVDGS/0000268776

which then led me to this...

Nice catch. Gate 17 was down for a bit in the early summer (after the 17B lead-in line was added prior to the LHR resumption). Probably was added around that time.

AC have now switched YYC/YOW-LHR for all of summer 2026 to the 330 instead of just ~the month of April.

AC856/859 YYZ-LHR and AC866/865 YUL-LHR (that lend two frequencies weekly each for YOW-LHR) are also swapped to the 333.

AC resuming YOW-YFC/YQM & YVR-YMM: https://www.aircanada.com/media/air-canada-announces-changes-to-its-regional-network/

Also ending service to YYB & ZBF, while increasing YYZ-YSB from 2x to 3x daily…clearly moving the YYB rotation to YSB.

YYC hasn't posted its July numbers, but said on social media that for the first time ever they surpassed 2 million pax in a single month.

I guess the next milestone to reach is 20 million in a year.

*EDIT* - oops, this was already mentioned above.

Air Canada ending service to North Bay as of Jan 30th, 2026 and increasing service to YSB - https://www.ctvnews.ca/northern-ontario/article/air-canada-to-end-flights-to-and-from-north-bay/ .

Nice video and lucky that you got to takeoff from 32 to take you over downtown.

It was lovely! We were too far north of Montreal to see much - or, if not, for the downtown to stand out.

Your comment reminds me - when I was waiting to fly out of YYT, I messaged the b'ys to say planes are landing at an angle I've never seen before - basically flying straight toward the terminal but shifted a little left, landing out of sight but seemingly behind us:

I'd never seen that before. And Marty looked into it, and replied:

Somewhat off the wall light hearted Saturday morning question from the non-frequent flyer over here.

How do the lavs compare on the different sizes of planes? Generally my flying has been of the Toronto to Florida variety or within that 2.5-3hour range and I typically don't go in the can. On my recent flight on Porter to San Francisco, as hard as I tried to not, I did end up needing to pee. I'm 6'5 250 and it wasn't fun. I literally couldn't stand close enough to the toilet to pee because of the curve of the fuselage, it was easier to just sit down and do it. Standing in the aisle, my head just about touches the ceiling of the plane, so when you go to the side, you rapidly lose headroom. The old me I don't even think would have fit through the little folding door to be honest.

The last time I recall going in the washroom on a plane was 20 years ago on a 757 coming back from the west coast and I don't recall any issue, even with my excess bulk at the time. Unless we do something sooner, my next flight I know I'm doing is Toronto to Copenhagen, and I know there is going to be a washroom visit on that. I think there are 2 non stops on 2 different airlines, SAS and AC, one narrowbody and one widebody. Are the lavs any more bearable on a 3x3 narrowbody or even a widebody, compared to what the 2x2 E2 has?

^ stick to widebodies. Larger lavs with more headroom (in the aisles as well).

Usually on a narrowbody the front lav is a tiny bit bigger than the aft one(s). For someone your height, it would be pretty cruel for an FA to not let you use it.

Less than a month after it's announcement, looks like YOW-YMM has been pulled by Porter.

Saw that coming. They need to feed YOW more before routes like this can be viable. They only had connections to and from YMM via YOW to like 4 destinations. Why? Why not the sun flights too? Where is YOW-YQB/YXU on the D4? These should be a thing.

People sometimes forget that connecting pax can make or break a route. Does YYZ have the demand for a thousand daily flights to California for example? No. Is YYC way overstretching the amount of service for a city that size? Yes. All thanks to the connecting pax from multiple other cities that far exceeds just 4.

I've hypothesized on this before but I don't think Ottawa offers any worthwhile connections from YXU. I seriously think they would sell more seats to YYZ than to YOW for connections. AC used to use a DH1 or DH3 on this route, is a DH4 maybe too much plane for this now? I really enjoyed flying on Porter but I'll be damned if I'm going to Ottawa to connect anywhere when Toronto is such an easy drive or an easy connection on the few AC flights a day. No way can Porter offer a fare cheap enough to sway enough people on that choice. Never mind too that Hamilton is also an ever increasing viable choice as well.

Does Porter have any international codeshare partners that they could feed into Toronto for?

In a few years time, PD will have YOW-North America pretty much covered so YXU-YOW-X will be more worthwhile then. I have to agree that driving to YYZ from London is a good option if going south or something along those lines. But YXU-YOW-Western Canada/Maritimes is a much better option than driving to YYZ IMO. There is for sure a market of pax that completely want to avoid YYZ. YOW these days is also seeing an increasing number of Toronto originating pax connecting in YOW, so I would have to say YXU won't be an exception. Earlier this year, I came back to YOW from LAS and when we landed they asked us all to stay seated because there were 22 pax on board with a very tight connection back to Toronto that needed to be let off first.
