1969. One of only a handful of buildings over 200 feet in Auatin at the time. If I'm not wrong, it was the 4th tallest in Austin at the time.

The construction of the Castilian was going strong in August of 1966.
I walked by there to summer school classes almost every day.
A week or so after the Whitman Tower shooting I was across the street on the sidewalk by the Varsity Theater when the construction crane dropped a heavy load of some materials creating a loud crash, scaring the shit out of me and several other pedestrians.
Some of us ducked down like we had done August 1st.

My brother was CEO of Seton Hospital during the 1970s….until moving to Louisiana in ‘79.
He oversaw the transition from the old West Campus location to the present-day facility on 38th Street.
My two youngest sons were born at the old Seton in 1971 & ‘72.
Oldest son was born at St. David’s in 1968. That was a much smaller hospital then.

Got this bag when my dad worked at the Capital National Bank (now Perry’s restaurant) in 1959.

The 12 story “highrise” building at the left behind the Baptist Service Center.
It is the Driskill annex.

Someone on Reddit made an interesting comment about the "half" floor between floors 7 and 8 on the Littlefield (where you see the smaller row of windows on the north side).

Streetview from 2024:

BAsically completly unrecognizable with 415 and 405 Colorado replacing almost all of those buildings

Well, if you're ever in Austin, Texas
A little run down on your sole
I'm gonna tell you the name of an old man to see
I'm gonna tell you right where to go
He's working in Capitol Saddlery
He's sewing in the back of the place
He's old Charlie Dunn, the little frail one
With the smile and the leathery face

[Chorus]
Charlie Dunn, he's the one to see
Charlie done the boots that are on my feet
It makes Charlie real pleased to see me walkin' with ease
Charlie Dunn, he's the one to see

[Verse 2]
Charlie's been makin' boots over there
He says about fifty some odd years
And once you wear a pair of his handmade boots
You know, you'll never wear a store-bought pair
Charlie can tell what's wrong with your feet
Just by feelin' 'em with his hands
And he can take a look at the boots you wear
And know a whole lot about you, man
See country shows near Austin
Get tickets as low as $269

[Bridge]
Now ol' Buck's up front, countin' up his gold
Charlie's in the back patchin' up the soles
All the people comin' in smilin' at him
They all wonder how's ol' Charlie been
Ol' Buck's makin' change, he never ever sees no one
He never understood the good thing Charlie done

[Verse 3]
Yeah, Ol' Charlie's never had his name on a sign
He never put a mark in the boot
He just hopes that you can remember him
The same way that he does you
He keeps your measurements in this little book
So you can order more boots later on
Well, I'm writin' down ol' Charlie's size
'Cause I'm a makin' him up a song

[Chorus]
Charlie Dunn, he's the one to see
Charlie done the boots that are on my feet
It makes Charlie real pleased to see me walkin' with ease
Charlie Dunn, he's the one to see

I remember when that tiny Tamale House triangular -shaped corner lot at the left (1st & Congress) was bought by a developer for about $950,000.

The town was amazed.

The little drive-thru joint sold some good tamales.
