Update, University of Utah - John and Marcia Price Computer Science Building

The College of Engineering has received a $15 million lead gift from philanthropists and benefactors John and Marcia Price to build a new home for computing.

This 253,000-square-foot structure, including 70,000 sq. ft. of research space will accommodate student demand for engineering and computer science degrees where enrollment has more than doubled in the past 20 years. The new building will house the Kahlert School of Computing as well as other engineering programs, including artificial intelligence, FinTech, cybersecurity, and emerging areas. The six story building will be constructed to the east of the John and Marva Warnock Engineering Building.

“We are pleased to lend our support to this effort that is so crucial to Utah’s expanding economy,” said John Price. “The University of Utah has an international reputation for innovation in computer science, and Marcia and I want to help ensure that opportunity for this generation and all future generations of Utah students.”

The Price’s contribution toward the new 209,000-square-foot, six-story building will support future growth for the School of Computing. The U produces 46% of the state system’s BS, MS, and Ph.D. computer science and computer engineering graduates with 1,929 enrolled students...

...The Price’s gift launched a $30 million private campaign for the forthcoming $120 million new building that will be located on the “tech corridor” of the University of Utah campus, between the Warnock Engineering Building and Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building. For the first time this decade, a Utah restaurant has been included in The New York Times’ annual “Restaurant List” — highlighting the 50 best eateries in the country.

Cosmica, an “Italian diner” that opened in Salt Lake City’s Central Ninth neighborhood in late March, is included in the annual roundup, which published Tuesday.

What were you looking to find out? I have access to the actual RFP that was put out, but you'd have to make a public records request to get access to their submission.

Here's some of the detail of the RFP:

III. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A. General Project Description:

1. The Architect services required in this RFP includes the site location, feasibility study, due diligence, programming, demolition, design and construction administration for the partial demolition and rebuild of the Salt Palace Convention Center (SPCC), AH back of house demolition and rebuild and/or other areas impacted by the SPCC, and the Visual Art Building/Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) demolition and re-build located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the services outlined in Exhibits B, C, and D, all in accordance with the Contract Documents: a) SPCC Project Requirements – Exhibit B b) UMOCA Project Requirements – Exhibit C c) AH Project Requirements – Exhibit D

2. Architect’s services will be provided in two phases, described below. In all phases, the Architect will be required to coordinate with the Owner’s Consultants(s).

3. The Project is currently funded for the Phase 1 Programming phase. The County may conduct future phases of the work, without additional competitive solicitation, to provide Architectural/Engineering (A/E) services for design, and construction administration services, project closeout and warranty phases contingent upon funding. Alternatively, Request for Proposals Stage 1 - Qualifications to Provide Architectural / Engineering Services Page 7 County may opt instead to issue a solicitation(s) for A/E Services for additional phases of the work.

4. Once the scope of work is determined, the County may enter into an amendment for additional phases of the work contingent upon funding availability.

B. Project Budget
1. It is anticipated that the FLCC for Phase 2 of the Project will be approximately $900,000,000 to $1,100,000,000. This approximate amount is subject to modification during Stage 2 of the RFP in County’s sole discretion. If the County executes an amendment adding Phase 2, the County will specifically identify the FLCC which will be included in the Agreement pricing for Phase 2. The Proposer will not proceed with any work on Phase 2 until an amendment is executed adding the Fixed Fee.

Yes, thanks Paniolo Man for the updates. I had been wondering about the Chicago St. Townhomes. Good to see they're back on track. Also, I guess Lusso was acquired by another company, and Kier has been hired to finish the project. It's now called 'Promontory Point'.

I will be really sad to see the old West High get demolished. My grandma, mom, and lots of aunts/uncles/cousins all went to that school. Plus it's just a cool looking historic building on the edge of downtown.

My great-grandma went there BEFORE the current building (that was from 1919 yearbook).

Yeah the design for West isn't great, but at least it has some articulation and color. That design for Highland looks like a giant gray fortress. How are we still doing this in the 2020s?

There is an unverified claim on the reddit forum saying the Hines Tower now plans to be 55 stories. Anyone with any knowledge able to confirm or deny that claim? I havent heard anything personally.

I think he was referring to the hines rebuild of the south temple tower as the current tallest tower under construction

As far as the 55 story tower, there have been rumblings about that. Can't remember who was quoted in the article about astra's completion, but whoever it was alluded to it as well

55 stories, assuming it's residential, would put this theoretical tower at ~600-700 ft depending on floor heights and architectural embellishments. That would certainly be cool to see, especially in that spot on Main Street!

I would guess that if this 55 story tower is real - it would probably be in Ryan Smith's Sports Entertainment District.

As for West and Highland Drive - I think the West High plans are OK at best, but the Highland High rendering look atrocious! I would also prefer that they found a way to just preserve the old West High. That is a beautiful building.
