This is interesting. I’ve imagined towers stretching along the river but in a westward direction up to Red Bud Isle Trail.

I'm not as certain as you, and would even posit that it's redevelopment is very likely at some point. That land is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Muny preservation board earns 2-year extension; historic golf course's outlook remains unclear

Following many years of public use under the university lease agreement, UT in 2019 announced its intentions to eventually end that arrangement and sell the land. Since then, debate has continued to swirl around the potential to preserve, sell or bring new construction to one of Central Austin's largest pieces of undeveloped real estate.

On June 10, Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law a measure from state Rep. Donna Howard, R-Austin, to keep the SHMD in place for two more years. The district is now scheduled to dissolve by May 31, 2025, pending any future action at the Capitol.

Past discussions about Muny referenced a possible price tag of around $100 million to reach a deal with the university, and the group previously reported collecting tens of millions of dollars toward that goal. But Richard Suttle, a lobbyist and land-use attorney working with UT on the Muny process, said back in late 2021 that a potential bid at that amount would be unlikely to move the needle for UT officials.

The four parcels that make up Muny are appraised at a total of $680.3 million this tax year, a notable jump up from a previous valuation of $408.66 million.

While I’ll be the first to line up to champion redevelopment if it ever gets proposed, I think whatever ends up getting built will be a mix of townhomes and limited upscale apartments while being comparatively light on office, hospitality, and commercial. It’ll end up looking a lot more like the Grove and less like the Domain or even Mueller.

Since moving here, I try my best to learn the culture in Austin. How do you guys pronounce some of the Austin words/name here?

On Facebook, people are telling me I mispronounced Mueller (Mew-ler) and it should be Miller? I never heard about that until now

Manchaca = Man-check
Burnet = Burn-it
Guadalupe = Guad-a-loop

Anything else?

That's pretty good. I'm an expatriate here, but I always heard people pronouncing these words like this, back in my day:

Manchaca - mayan-shack
Burnet - bir-nett
Interstate 35 - thuh inner-state -or- inner-state haw-why
Mopac - mo-pack ;-)
Pedernales - perd-nal-ez
Pay day - pie-die

OK, just having a bit of fun. Back when Bill Clements was the governor, he had the quintessential TX accent (always sounded pissed off, too).

Don't listen to them. I'm a native Austinite, and I call it Mew- ler. I also pronounce Menchaca and Guadalupe correctly, but I do say Burn-it.

Personally, I say "Guad" (like "quad") rather than going through the full word.

Burnet, the town/county and the street, has always had the emphasis on the first syllable. The person for whom those named pronounced it that way. There are other people in history who had the same spelling who put the emphasis on the second syllable. Additionally, there are a couple other towns (Burkburnett, a tiny town on the Red River, for instance) that put the emphasis on "net" as well. It throws a lot of people off.

In addition to the streets, a lot of Central Texas towns are pronounced differently than the phonetic or linguistically accurate pronunciations. A few that come to mind:

Manor = "maine-er"
Salado = "sa-lay-do"
Llano = "lann-o"
Blanco = "blank-o"
Bourne = "burn-ee"

We have to leave a few off, of course, to give us more signs that you ain't from around here...

That's honestly crazy haha. Honestly no matter how I pronounce something, I always get a divide in my videos of, "you mispronounced Burnet/Manchaca/Manor" etc.

The members of the RMMA Plan Implementation Committee all call it 'Miller' at their monthly meetings, so I get that it's supposed to be pronounced that way, but as residents of Mueller ourselves my spouse and I call it 'Mewler', and many of our neighbors do too.

One place I'm always unsure of however is Elgin. Is it with a soft or hard g? I suppose that might be a little far out for Austinites to have an opinion on.

I always say Elgin with a hard G since 1983 and never been corrected. That doesn't mean that it's correct just that it sounds better.
