Razor,
Looks like that German website pulled the data direct from Statistics Canada

I made a post with this data the other day in the city discussions forum where I linked to the table from Stats Can. You have to make sure that 2024 is selected in the Reference period options.

I lurk on that section more than any other section, and I didn't initially see your post, but I see it now..Seems legit..I was just surprised at some of the growth since the last Census..Get ready for CFL London?..Heck if this was 1971, maybe NHL?

man that is a massive spike for Montreal (2023->2024, last two columns).

Anyways, I was just doing some random googling over coffee here, and I haven't looked at one of these lists in awhile now. Yes it's one of those Canadian Metro "estimated" rankings lists (2024), and I don't know how accurate this is. Only a few surprises..Toronto, Ottawa Gat , and Kitchener caught me off guard a little bit, because they seem a tad higher than expected considering the Census wasn't all that long ago. If this is accurate, then a party needs to be planned for Winnipeg, as it's approaching a milestone..https://www.citypopulation.de/en/canada/agglo/
That table has the Toronto CMA incorrectly labeled as The Greater Toronto Area. The Greater Toronto Area would also include the Oshawa CMA & the city of Burlington, & had a population of just under 7.8 million as of 2024.

I should of mentioned Montreal too. It also appeared a little high. What's your thoughts on London according to that list?

I always thought that the normal convention was that Stats Can never did include Oshawa for the Greater Toronto Area, and that was the debate..That it should be included? The naming was always there though.I don't recall it being referred to as "Metropolitan Toronto" .The boundaries stopped short of Oshawa, because it anchored it's own CMA. Ditto for Hamilton...Now if we were in the U.S. It would be different! Edit: Never mind..You are correct I just checked.

London was growing like gangbusters until it wasn't. Red hot market from the end of 2021 up until mid 2024, then a steep drop off since. Properties/houses on the market are not moving, and condo sites are sitting undeveloped or being converted to rentals.

Oh Okay..I had a friend who moved there for work, and basically said the same thing sans the collapse. He was only there for a brief period when things were rolling, and has since moved to Kingston.

Similar feeling in Niagara. During the peak one could put their house for sale on Monday and it more than likely would be snapped up by Friday, with bidding wars no less.

Now it's taking 40-42 days to sell a home.
Avg price for July was $661,000

We'll have to wait til January to see the 2025 population estimates for census subdivisions/municipalities to see what parts of Ontario grew faster than others.

Another thing I noticed was how large in area both Edmonton and Ottawa/Gat are. They also have fairly low population densities. At least in comparison to other larger Canadian metros. Ottawa/Gat now includes far flung communities like Carleton Place and Arnprior..It's getting ridiculous! Mind you, I'm aware that there are a lot of commuters from both Carleton Place and Arnprior. Check out Hamilton. There's some good density in a nice compact city. Ditto for both Kitchener and Oshawa.

On the northbound 416 there is a sign when you enter the city limits of Ottawa. Nothing but forests and fields for the next 10 or so kilometres.

Oh for sure..I'm aware of that stretch, but behind almost every field is a farm house, and they have to count that family in I guess.

Yellowknife is crawling along with a small growth rate, while Whitehorse has almost doubled in population. No information on Iqualuit, what a shame, they deserve a spot.

Hmm, yes I see what you mean, StatCan had better add Okotoks to Calgary CMA to make up for it

But if Okotoks were added to Calgary CMA, would there still be a number of things to do there???

There would be a number of things to do in Calgary, simply by virtue of absorbing Okotoks. Fortunately, "Stats Canada" has a "hate-on" for the Calgary CMA, so they are unlikely to be amalgamated.

Well in all fairness. Calgary should include the Okotoks seeing as Ottawa seemingly included every cow, pig, and farm dog into their numbers. Both Carleton Place and Arnprior are further out of Ottawa then The Okotoks is to Calgary. Look out Renfrew and Brockville, you'll soon be incorporated!

On a more serious note, if those numbers are correct, then Calgary will also hit a major Milestone is less then a decade, with Ottawa and Edmonton not all that far behind. I'm old enough to remember when Vancouver's Metro was 1.5 million. I guess I was a demographics geek even as a child! 2035 may look like Canada having 3 cities with 2 million people, potentially 3 more (QC, Hamilton, and Winnipeg) hitting a million, and a couple more that wouldn't be too far behind that (London and Kitchener). I'm really looking forward to more cookie cutter subdivisions. Costcos, and strip malls in Ottawa!

It'll just be the Ottawa/Gatineau/Hawkesbury/Cornwall/Greater Montreal area at that point.

I’m not sure why Okotoks is getting so much discussion. Okotoks can’t just be added to Calgary because of proximity, it’s based on various formulas, mainly due to commuting rules. Someday maybe it will, but it’s not something that’s going to happen unless it meets the criteria.
