My wife and I got to visit Area 506 over the weekend for the first time. Lots of people there (good weather) even though there was no cruise ship in port. Nice to see. I'd love to see Moncton pull together something like that. Obviously the shipping container motif doesn't translate as easily to here, but overall the concept is very much what I hope to see for Downing Street once the adjacent developments crystalize.

Market + Perpetual People Place.

Yeah that feels like something Moncton's missing at the moment. Hopefully the downtown plans can squeeze a community space like that in. SJ has rea 506, and Freddy's got Officers Square, both great places to set up markets and/or to set up events (as Freddy has been doing most of the summer)

I’m not from Moncton, but seems to me there are just spaces strung together along the riverfront without any major focal point. That whole area is a blank canvas where they can really hit it out of the park with a beautiful space. I picture an actual boardwalk with LED type lit railings like Fundy Quay with concert spots, busker areas and stone pavers. Feds I believe kicked in $9m to redesign down at Market Square, so not sure why Moncton didn’t land anything similar (or maybe they did). I see the problem is Assomption Blvd. Seems to have that feeling where it cuts the riverfront off from the downtown that will fill up with residences. Maybe it can be narrowed and extensively treed with grand light standards or completely remove it from Foundry to Main. Either way they are in the enviable position of a blank canvas if done right and with proper amount of $$

I'm pretty sure that's the intent for Downing, as I've seen renders that indicate that. If so, it'll be fantastic, with the market nearby. I hope I'm still working downtown when it comes to fruition.

There's a thread on the main Canada forum about the Vernacular Architectural Styles of different Canadian cities. I've been saving up some of the best pics of buildings in Uptown Saint John and throughout the city and region. If I ever get around to posting in the thread with dozens of examples, I may have to include this one if you don't mind! Great picture

I don't think many Canadians from outside the region know just how impressive the architecture is here in Saint John. Canadians here on SSP are a bit of an exception, but luckily Saint John and New Brunswick as a province have been getting a lot more exposure and national recognition in recent years.

Can we agree to transfer the moniker “Fortress of Solitude” from the SJ court house to the new Fredericton one? Man that’s an ugly building!

Maybe the rendering isn’t doing it justice. I’m interested in the final product - gives me Southern California civic centre vibe. I’d also have to see how it fits in surrounding area as that’s important.

Saint John to get 20 new public housing units with help of modular construction

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-bruns...s-head-woodward-avenue-modular-1.7619807

Quote:
Saint John is getting 20 new one-bedroom public housing units in the north end for working-age people, as the provincial government continues to struggle to address the housing crisis across New Brunswick.

A 10-unit modular complex on Boars Head Road is expected to be ready for tenants later this year, with two of the units being accessible, David Hickey, the minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, announced Thursday.

Another 10-unit modular development on nearby Woodward Avenue, also with two accessible units, should be complete by early next year, he said.

Hickey eyes 'underused' land

In addition to using surplus government-owned land for public housing, Hickey hopes to focus on underused property as well.

He cited Millidgeville North School on Woodward Avenue as an example. It sits on a roughly 16-hectare parcel, which is "massively underused," he said.

There could be public housing units on the road frontage, while the water frontage could be sold to a private developer, with that money helping to pay for more public housing, Hickey said.

He hopes to have a system in place by next year to identify underused government-owned land, he said.

"If government truly recognizes we're in a housing crisis, every department needs to play a role."
Interesting to see him call out a specific property like that. I am not familiar with the terrain, but I imagine the waterfront land would be appealing to developers.

This idea has been talked about before but it is not without issues. The waterfront is actually pretty poor quality........ Marsh frontage on Den Boom Cove which itself is very shallow and weedy so not great for swimming or boating. Road access would also be a challenge. The higher land leading down to the water has a lot of rocky ravines, outcroppings and ledges. Could it be done? Sure, but I'm not sure of the financial viability.

The land along Ragged Pt Road (past the sports fields) or in the land fronting on the school access road and Woodward would seem to be the low hanging fruit.
