A tentative groundbreaking for the redevelopment of the Cheetah Lounge is set for later this year, a Core Spaces spokesperson said. Phase one of the project should be complete by 2029. The development will also include 5,000 square feet of retail space and a third-floor amenity deck, according to this week's announcement.

An earlier version of this story erroneously reported that the building will be constructed behind the Academy of Medicine in Midtown. Core Spaces has actually pulled out from building on that site, the Chronicle has learned. And now the site behind the Academy of Medicine is back in play after Core Spaces' exit.

That space behind the Academy of Medicine seems to me like it would be a very tricky project, seeing as how the Marta line runs directly beneath it, and it's not that big of a footprint, and they still need to allow for some sort of parking (a deck, as was planned) for GT events, etc at the Academy. I get GT trying to maximize their land holdings, but a big student tower right there didn't exactly feel right.

My dream project would be to build an ATL twist on brownstones there. Brick façade, terra cotta roof, ground floor for seniors, middle 2 floors as a family home, and the top floor for students.

I left my 2¢ in the survey. I picked the site across Forsyth Street from Five Points, next to the Constitution building. Copied below:

This is the only location that makes sense.

Five Points MARTA station already extends underneath Forsyth Street, and has punchout walls facing this site, next to the old Atlanta Constitution building.

This would allow direct, under street access to all MARTA lines. In addition, it would give the station direct access to the Railroad Gulch, where all of the rail lines intersect.

Several adjacent sites exist that could contribute to the station being built there.

There is a lot behind 56 Marietta Street, directly northeast of the site.

Centennial Yards has also indicated that it is welcome to an Amtrak station joining the site. Several properties they currently own are adjacent to the site.

Behind the old Atlanta Journal Building (currently known as 2 City Plaza), they have already earmarked the building where they used to print the papers to be demolished. In addition, the two parking decks between Spring & Centennial Olympic Park Drive (formerly Techwood) have also been earmarked for demo.

The combination of these sites would allow for plenty of room to locate a passenger terminal here. It would allow for direct access to the Airport via MARTA, at the southeast end, and direct access to the State Farm Arena at the Northeast end.

I don't think you could find a better site to put a new Amtrak station.

The only request I would have for other adjacent sites is that several are historic, and should be preserved. Namely, the Atlanta Constitution building, which is currently being redeveloped as "The Pitch"— and the Atlanta Journal building, minus the printing press building adjacent to it. Demolishing these would be a great loss to the city.

Thanks for opening this to public comment! I hope that this site will be the one chosen for the new Amtrak station for the reasons I listed.

Is there any way for Amtrak to have a station downtown without them having to turn around southbound trains to go to Birmingham? (And northbound trains to DC)? The trains from DC go down 85 and then go behind Atlantic Station on the way to Birmingham. The trains would need to turn around if they went downtown and head back up to Atlantic station to head to Birmingham. In looking at a rail map, if they changed the Crescent to skip Birmingham and just head to Montgomery, the trains would not need to turn around anymore if the station was moved downtown. Anyone more in the know enlightenment me on this

Trinity Central Flats affordable housing project downtown is moving forward, according to Urbanize Atlanta.

Invest Atlanta approved new financing structures; groundbreaking scheduled for this year. 218 apartments and streetfront retail on an empty lot near city hall.

However, that design is boring. I wish they would just use a solid brick facade.

That parking deck is AGONY!

The parking deck is already there, so the good news is this project won't add any parking. In fact, it may actually remove some parking, as part of this project is a rooftop garden and solar panels on top of the existing deck.

Building permit for 9 townhomes at 252 Eugenia in Mechanicsville.

I had forgotten about this project and assumed it was dead. Building permits filed for the Townplace Suites Hotel at 526 West Peachtree on the south end of Midtown.

The student housing on Tech's campus at 734 Techwood is moving forward. The current one-story building is blocked off for demolition.

"Project is composed of 5 stories and a basement. 55 residential units are located in basement and levels 2, 3 and 4. A commercial space located in level 1 and facing the street will be the new Baptist Collegiate Ministry venue and offices. This level also includes a leasing office, amenity area for residents and a coffee shop."

Would include 1,000 apartments (30% of them low-income), 345 student housing beds, 150-room hotel, 120,000 sqft retail. Now branded as "One West End."

It will be a dual-branded hotel. I believe this is the current rendering.
