Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma has ‘flashed’ during Green Bay Packers training camp, needs to ‘maximize’ opportunities in NFL preseason
Justin Dunk 3downnation.com August 8, 2025

Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma should see playing time in the Green Bay Packers’ first preseason game against the New York Jets.

Head coach Matt LaFleur said the team will do its best to give all four quarterbacks — franchise man Jordan Love, Malik Willis, Sean Clifford, and Elgersma — “meaningful reps” at Lambeau Field on Saturday night.

“Certainly, some of those guys are going to play longer than others,” LaFleur said.

The 23-year-old signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May. Green Bay believed he would bring a lot of competition to the QB room. He threw a touchdown pass during the Packers Family Night scrimmage on Saturday, August 2 and impressed LaFleur despite limited reps in training camp.

“He’s another guy that’s flashed. He’s got the arm talent. It’s just the consistency. It’s always hard for a guy… the majority of the reps are going to Jordan and Malik,” LaFleur said.

The 2024 Hec Crighton trophy winner needs to be ready for his first live game action in the NFL. Performing well against the Jets can go a long way towards earning a spot with the Packers going into the 2025 regular season, be it on the active roster or practice squad. He’s in competition with Clifford for the third-string role but there’s a possibility Green Bay keeps four quarterbacks.

“Both he and Sean, they’ve got to maximize their opportunities, they’re getting limited reps in practice. A lot of their training comes post-practice in regards to working through the script,” LaFleur said. “When they get in those situations on Saturday night, the expectation is that you’re going to go out there and execute.”

Kickoff goes Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT on NFL Network. After playing the Jets, the Packers will travel to Indianapolis on Saturday, August 16 and host Seattle to finish the team’s preseason schedule on Saturday, August 23.

Prior to 4 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, August 26, each NFL team must cut rosters down to 53 players. Following a waiver claiming period that ends at noon EDT on Wednesday, August 27, franchises can establish a 17-player practice squad.

Now I know why I watch CFL football. I sat through the first NFL game in I can't remember how long waiting for Taylor Elgersma. Packers suck bad and when Elgersma finally saw the field with three minutes left in the game he had the best passing percentage of the four QBs. He looked comfortable in his short stint but the stupid rules didn't allow him to do any more as the clock ran out with 20 some seconds left.

The commentators were clueless which didn't help with the disenjoyment but I bet they keep Elgersma around. The guy ahead of him Clifford moves like a statue.

Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma looks comfortable in first NFL preseason game with Green Bay Packers
Justin Dunk August 10, 2025

Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma experienced his first NFL preseason action with the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night at Lambeau Field against the New York Jets. He became the first Canadian university QB to play in an NFL exhibition game since 1982.

The 23-year-old Elgersma entered the game with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter. He completed three-of-four passes for 24 yards during his only drive which ended with time expiring in the final frame.

Off play-action, he completed an in-breaking route across the middle to rookie receiver Will Sheppard for 10 yards and a first down. His second pass attempt was behind rookie Isaiah Neyor as he broke inside and fell incomplete. The London, Ont. native moved to his left and checked down to third-year tight end Johnny Lumpkin for four yards. Finally, the six-foot-five, 227-pound QB ripped a slant route throw to Sheppard for a first down on fourth-and-five.

Elgersma signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May following a rookie mini-camp tryout, becoming the fourth Canadian university QB to sign with an NFL team and the first since 1987. He threw a touchdown pass during the Packers Family Night scrimmage on Saturday, August 2 and has flashed despite limited reps in training camp, according to head coach Matt LaFleur.

Elgersma won the Hec Crighton Trophy, Canada’s equivalent to the Heisman Trophy (WTF does he think we don't know what it is and know the Heisman? - elly), in 2024 while leading Wilfrid Laurier University to a Vanier Cup appearance. That earned him the chance to be the second U Sports player ever invited to the Senior Bowl college all-star game and first Canadian university quarterback.

Over four years with the Golden Hawks, Elgersma completed 72 percent of his passes for 10,230 yards, 76 touchdowns versus 28 interceptions in 39 games. He rushed 122 times for 572 yards, averaging 4.7 per carry, and 18 touchdowns. The QB was twice named the Ontario University Athletics Conference’s Most Valuable Player, earning first-team All-Canadian honours in 2024 and a second-team selection in 2023.

The Packers visit the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, August 16, for their second preseason game. Elgersma could have another shot to improve his odds at making the active roster or practice squad.

there are lots of FIFA posts in social media that they are moving games to Mexico and Canada as too many people are scared to go to the USA for the World Cup next year.

It's obviously fake news but people make comments, some are like let Calgary and Montreal get some of the games for instance.

So the discussion point is if this was real could any Canadian cities just step in and host some games? its not much time.

As it is, Vancouver's BC Place is having to spend a lot of money to upgrade the stadium just to meet FIFA's demands for the games it will be hosting. Would other Canadian stadiums have enough time to do the necessary upgrades and be ready to host some games?

In a word, no. Of course if it was an emergency situation you could do anything: temp stands, turf over artificial turf. But if it had to have the ridiculous FIFA standards and the money necessary for things like security it would be no

Let's not forget Vancouver was one of a few cities that dropped out of the bidding because of the ridiculous cost (Montreal and Chicago) as well. Although I think Edmonton (Alberta) made some demands of their own that weren't going to be met, they would be screwed out of getting a true shot and Vancouver got back into the race.

I almost made the mistake saying that Montreal would have all the hotels etc necessary and then I remembered the Big O roof is in a bunch of pieces right now and won't reopen until 2028.

Basically, it's fake news. Aside from informal boycotts how many countries have formally cancelled events in the US. And I can't think of too many that will not want to go to this one.

The only city that could feasibly host games on sort notice is Edmonton. Calgary and Montreal don’t have the stadiums.

Except all you ever heard about Commonwealth and Edmonton were mystery complaints mostly from Toronto. Funny how you never heard exactly what was wrong with Commonwealth or the city.

Realistically any city that could accommodate a large number of people could do it. Most CFL stadiums could get to 40k with temp seats and were designed to do that and 40k is about what you need for a group game.

There are better ways to lay turf over artificial than has been done in the past. This is what BC is doing

BC Place Stadium Undergoes Turf Transformation

And even better what they are doing at SoFi

Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma has made third-string QB competition with Sean Clifford ‘interesting’
Justin Dunk 3downnation.com August 19, 2025

Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma continues to compete with veteran Sean Clifford for the third-string role with the Green Bay Packers.

Elgersma played more than Clifford in the team’s second preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium this past weekend.

“It’s a combination of wanting to see more of what Taylor can do. That was the mindset of Saturday — let’s get him out there and see what he’s about,” offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich, who called the plays, explained post-game.

“We’ve seen Sean a lot, but it’s also let’s see what Taylor does with the bulk of the backup reps. Both those guys went out there and competed and led touchdown drives. It’s going to be interesting.”

The 27-year-old Clifford has spent two seasons with Green Bay after being selected in the fifth round, 149th overall by the Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft. Clifford was the primary backup in his rookie year and then spent most of the 2024 season on the practice squad. He completed one-of-four passes for 11 yards while rushing three times for 19 yards including the game-winning touchdown.

“Sean went in and did what he had to do. He led us down on a touchdown drive and used his legs in some critical moments, a fourth-down scramble and the touchdown run. I thought there was some good things there,” head coach Matt LaFleur said.

The 23-year-old Elgersma was signed as an undrafted free agent in May. The Wilfrid Laurier University product completed 7-of-11 passes for 109 yards while rushing one time for four yards. He led three scoring drives, two resulted in touchdowns and one a field goal in five possessions. Emanuel Wilson lost a fumble and Green Bay punted after Elgersma was sacked on another drive.

“I think there was some really good moments that he had in showing the ability to progress and then there was a couple that he forced in there. The touchdown to Ben Sims that didn’t count, we can’t throw that ball. Then he had the one that got picked off, that got called back for a face mask, you can’t throw that ball,” LaFleur said.

“For his first I would call extended action, I thought there was some really good moments and then also some things that you have to learn from. But he’s still getting used to the field dimensions out there from Canada. Taylor, he likes contact. He wasn’t about to slide. I saw him pushing the pile on [Amar Johnson’s] touchdown run. He’s got to learn to be a little bit smarter, I would say, in that regard.”

The 45-year-old LaFleur was asked what he’s looking for in his third-string quarterback.

“Somebody who can command the offence,” he said. “You want somebody that you can develop into — hopefully — a guy that can play for you someday. You want to see that level of consistency within every position, but in particular the quarterback position that’s so critical to the success of the offence. That’s what we’re trying to hunt.”

The Packers play the team’s third and final preseason game at 4 p.m. EDT on Saturday
at Lambeau Field against the Seattle Seahawks. How Elgersma and Clifford perform could go a long way in determining who wins the third-string quarterback role in Green Bay.

Prior to 4 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, August 26, each NFL team must cut rosters down to 53 players. Following a waiver claim period that ends at noon EDT on Wednesday, August 27, franchises can establish a 17-player practice squad.

Lacrosse news; the NLL's Albany Fire Wolves will be relocating to Oshawa to play out of the OHL rink there. Apparently since most lacrosse players live and work full time jobs in Canada, the lack of Toronto-Albany flights made it difficult.

The reports about moving games out of the US next year is more to do with the US not allowing some countries athletes into the country, or having ICE detain them. That's a perfectly valid concern, lots of athletes who have competed in the US many times are being denied entry. Not sure if any have been detained by the Gestapo yet though.

That being said, Trump will likely make exceptions because he likes being the center of attention and probably wants to partake in the championship trophy presentation like he did with the Club World Cup.

Awesome to see another team moving to Canada, but man the US-based NLL franchises have been having a rough go the past few years. The FireWolves were themselves a relocated franchise in 2020, originally from Connecticut. This combined with the relocation of the original Rochester Knighthawks to Halifax in 2019 (now the Halifax Thunderbirds), the New York Riptide to Ottawa in 2024 (now the Ottawa Black Bears), and the folding of the Panther City Lacrosse Club in Fort Worth also happening in 2024, has been brutal turnover.

Worth noting that Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa is receiving a beefy $50M upgrade paid for by the City of Oshawa (with a small investment from Oak View Group), so this is going to be a really good location for the team to land.

A club in Oshawa also neatly divides the GTA between the now-Hamilton-based Rock. The potential for a local derby is lots of fun to think about.

I’m looking forward to seeing if this ends up budding into a proper local rivalry, especially now with the Ottawa Black Bears in the Ontario mix. IMO the Rock should either rebrand to Hamilton Rock or move somewhere in the GTA, but there aren’t many better arena options at this time and they pulled good attendance in Hamilton before the TD Coliseum renovations.

This apparently may not be the last of the relocations to Canada either. There is word going around that the Philadelphia Wings are going to move and are looking at Montreal. The Rochester Knighthawks were also on the brink for a while, but they recently got purchased by the Seneca Nation and will remain in Rochester.

Another solid showing from Taylor Elgersma, he gets his first TD pass to cap off a long drive of rushes. More uninformed TV commentary (saying he played in the CFL).

I read one Internet poster who said he had an NFL arm but was uncomfortable in the pocket. He's looked pretty comfortable to me and seems to have command of the team.

It's going to be hard for the coach to let him go, if he does someone else is sure to pick him up.

Like I said in my last post about homegrown athletes, we might as well get used to them winning the home tournament. Now Brooke Henderson wins the Canadian Open soon after Vicky won the tennis version. And damn, the tournament was held a few hundred metres away from the in-laws’ house. I would have checked it out if I wasn’t away.
